Hi I've been with Orcon for 3 weeks and have just noticed that both uploads and downloads count towards your monthly cap total.
I think this is crap. Don't the other ISP's give you a monthly download only cap?

Glad I'm not tied into a contract with Orcon because I'm thinking of leaving after discovering this.

Keen to hear other opinions on this :)

they do the same as every other isp that supplies dsl in NZ

however orcon report it better where you can see what you data you uploaded and downloaded, which is great. lots of other isps show 1 figure for both per day which is probably why your confused.

I used to be with Vodafone and yes they showed only the download total, but I'm sure that my speed only droppped when I exceeded their limit. Eg. 2GB+ in a 24hr period.
I was with them for a year and am pretty certain that my upload did not effect my total cap because I could plan what I needed to download based around my limit that was left. Uploading pictures etc etc didn't seem to change my total for the month.
Maybe I'm wrong and just didn't notice...

Actually The vodafone usage meter, says Data Usage & Data Tracker, as pasted from their usage meter below.

Check your usage

data usage for X from 10-Feb-2009 to 09-Mar-2009

(Please remember that it takes some time for any data you've used to display here. Before Vodafone acquired Ihug, they didn't count uploads. This was a few years back.

It still costs them the same for uploads - therefore they should be charging you for it.
If Vodafone didnt charge in the past then it is no surprise they do now.

I think the only other thing that an ISP doesnt charge for is email via the ISP's own servers but that has probably gone too now.
