Telephone? what is this? :-) Buy an ATA (something like this - https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NETYST1037/Yeastar-TA200-2-Port-FXS-VoIP-Gateway-ATA) or put existing router into bridge ish mode and use that for phone only....

Has the EdgeRouter software got a LOT better since the EdgeRouter Lite?

The Lite was a horrible product to configure. No IPv6 in the GUI meant I had to look up how to do things on the command line to make minor changes.

When using the Netgear Orbi the phone service is via the ONT.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I would not be recommending the Edgerouter to anyone... There are practically no software updates being pushed out to it anymore. There has been no software changes for years now (last major release was back in 2018 I believe).

To be honest unless if you have a darn good excuse you should be using the recommended router from the ISP. Failing that, pick up a Spark Smart Modem from Trademe / Facebook Marketplace as they're really good and stable routers with great WiFi and have mesh support with the Spark Smart Mesh.

Or, the provided Orbi sent by Slingshot/2degrees.

A beta 3.x version of EdgeRouter firmware is available at the moment to people who are signed up for access to betas.
