I live in Beach Haven on the North Shore and currently use the Motorola K3.

When i go to network settings and run a search for available networks, it comes up two two networks:

vodafone NZ

and

NZL-24

I can't connect to NZL-24 but was just wondering if anyone knew what it was? Was thinking it could be NZ Comms but heard that would be shown up as NZ Communications, not NZL-24 (whih sounds like a sports team of some sort)?

Yes this is NZ Comms, Please be aware that NZ Comms wil not be their marketed name...

I know, What I find odd is that Telecom are getting very close to their release but they have only switched on a small amount of their cell sites. When I checked In Auck last year there wasnt any signal, but in Wellington there was alot. Now its switched. NZComms are almost everywhere...

Telecom is everywhere. Still some big dead spots around but they do have pretty good coverage.

Do you actually have a phone that supports WCDMA850?

Hey, yeah I Do, well Im sure it does cos it does get Telecom on the 3G part...

Telecom's new network is 3G only.

Last year before the decision was made to dump their GSM component there was 2100MHz 3G coverage throughout a bit bit of Wellington. Since the move to nationwide 850 WCDMA most of this 2100 infrastructure is no longer active since it's no longer necessary.

I'm picking your phone doesn't do 850 so you are only picking up the odd 2100 site that is still operational.

There is one at the bottom of tramway - last I looked it still had a cable hanging out where the microwave dingaling would go so it may not be operational yet, unless thats to link out to somewhere else rather then to link into it.

I suspect its not up yet since I only get 2 bars on nz24 at home in rambler, and I can see the site from my place (just)

There will be some 2100 which will simply be to provide infill capacity. It will not be complete 2100 coverage like Telecom originally planned when they announced their GSM rollout.

This has been covered extensively in other threads on Geekzone.

Telecom will be using 2100MHz 3G for capacity "infill" only, it won't be blanket "guaranteed" coverage everywhere.

Now back on topic please people :-)
