It's quite obvious Orcon.

Last week:

Downloadspeeds;

HTTP: 500kbps

RapidShare(without account): 100kbps

Private Tracker: 500kbps

From Saturday(so last 3 days):
download speeds;

HTTP: 500kbps

RapidShare: 3kbps

Private Tracker: 20kbps

..................

If this is a technical problem Orcon then please fix it but if this is trully traffic shaping being enforced then I WILL be leaving to go back to Xtra, because I don't pay $120 a month on your most expensive plan to be treated this way. :(

Yes of course they are managing their traffic... it would be madness not to.

Read these:
http://www.orcon.net.nz/lifestyle/page/broadband_service_control_in_the_orcon_network/
http://www.orcon.net.nz/lifestyle/page/broadband_service_control_in_the_orcon_network_followup/

Probably they have just had a surge of new users or increased peak time usage and haven't had enough new international bandwidth come on stream yet.

Residential adsl is a shared bandwidth service operated on a contention ratio.  Your $120 per month doesn't cover anyway near the full cost of a dedicated 10Mbit connection, ISP's don't provision their international bandwidth at 10Mbit per user it's more like 64Kbit or anywhere from 20:1 to 100:1 contention ratio.

The figures provided by the OP are meaningless with a context in which to place them.

As for traffic shaping, I have no problem whatsoever with Orcon shaping P2P down during the busy periods, namely (approx) 7:00am to 0:00 and the weekends. They hae always done that and are upfront about it, unlike other ISPs.

Just be glad they are not like some US ISPs who throttle P2P and gaming traffic down to virtually nothing.

Orcon provide a very good service. I have been with them pretty much since they have been providing ADSL, firstly through the UBS "service" provided by Telecom, throught the provisioning issues due to Telecom dragging their feet when Orcon outgrew their allocated bandwidth, through a couple other of issues. Overall I have been very happy and recommend Orcon to everyone.

I'd go on a Vegan diet but the delivery time from Vega is too long.

i suppose your one of the free users on rap share and just clicks on the download button when it appears well if you look to the left you'll see an + click on it and you'll see a whole lot of other host sites to choose from try the telesonora site thats usualy pretty quick i'll often get over 150KBps from there so dont just blindly blame orcon without first trying all other avenues

They sure do, and I hope they keep on doing it. It's for our benefit, and theirs too.

I'm using the Orcon Traditional network ADSL. My exchange is somewhere between 800m to 1.1Km. I use bit torrent alot, and if the tracker has alot of peers and seeders, I get speeds ranging from 150Kbps to 750Kbps. My line sync for d/s is 8160Kbps, and the u/s is 925Kbps. And by the way it took ONE day for my Broadband service to be transfered from TelstraClear to Orcon! As they were doing the transfer, I noticed that the sync speeds went up from 7616Kbps D/S, and 716Kbps U/S.

I find my internet connection is faster then my old ISP, Telstra.

No wonder my MMO gaming has gone to crap during peak right on the dot around 9.30pm to about 11pm recently. Keep getting disconnected from Warhammer online and can't connect back at all! So I am guessing Orcon's magic traffic shaping thing is mistaking MMO gaming traffic for bittorrent? :-(

Hope someone at Orcon can check this out!

Your poor gaming performance during peak hours is not caused by Orcon's traffic prioritisation... in fact your Warhammer Online traffic would fall under their 'default' category, which as I understand it is given the highest priority (along with HTTP, et cetera).  Indeed it has less to do with throughput and more to do with packetloss due to congestion (although the two are related).  Even 'default' traffic suffers from high congestion across international links during peak hours.  When routers become congested, some data packets get discarded, and for a given user this can persist for seconds at a time, which in the case of most MMOs will often lead to poor playability and frequent disconnections.

According to their CTO, Orcon doesn't shape traffic (which means to blatantly restrict the data rate of a particular type of traffic to an arbitrary level), but rather de-prioritises P2P (and now one or two HTTP client-server based sharing sites)... this means packetloss during peak hours, although in the case of P2P and HTTP downloads this is simply seen by the user as a decrease in throughput.  If they were de-prioritising gaming traffic... games would be quite simply unplayable (unless played on national servers)... even though they are scarcely better than unplayable with 'default' priority.

I cringe to think what the general internet experience would be like without the prioritisation in place.

I have Orcon ADSL2+ at home and Telstra's VDSL service in the office. For the same amount of money, Telstra's service is faster AND not shaped.

So saying that $120 a month doesn't cover for the costs, I beg to differ. I do not want 10Mbit/s at home. Just the same amount of service that was provided before the new traffic shaping equipment was put in. It made me much happier then.

I am proud to be with Orcon for their openness with their practices, but I don't like being throttled that badly.

This is the exact same issue i had playing AoC and within the same time period. After dicking around with Orcon support i was told everything was normal and the job would be closed.

Ive moved to Telstra and everything is fine again. There is a rant topic somewhere here that i made about this issue.

Based on my experiance, XNET are a great example of what happens when you don't prioritise traffic.

I'm guessing this would be why my HTTP downloads have been so fast in the last few days...

I'm not too bothered by this shaping, as if im downloading, its over HTTP.
