I'll start off by saying this is not Orcon bashing... I'm actually sad that they don't offer a suitable plan for me. They have always been helpful and although I've had some issues with my connection I'm only wanting to move away from them because other ISPs offer more suitable plans for me now. This I assume would effect people on the Red network too.

I've been on the Orcon+ network for about a year now (and with Orcon for about 3-4+ years). I tried to move before unsuccessfully and now I really need to move (basically to a provider with data caps).

Apparently since I'm on Orcon+ equipment at the exchange I can't switch directly to the Red network without moving first to Telecom. So much for LLU giving the consumer more choice.

So I can't switch to any other provider other than Telecom. Or I can ditch my line and start fresh paying for a totally new connection.

Can anyone offer up some advice on how to deal with this? Again I'm not after "how bad orcon is" I just need some advise. There must be someone else who has dealt with this.

Surely you must be able to port your number directly to your new ISP (i.e. VFNZ) and they will just connect your phone and broadband service?

In saying that if they even get something that simple right, then perhaps you should look at other options offered over the Telecom network (i.e. Telecom Retail or a Wholesaled connection).

I find is very strange. Unfortunately it's the same thing that both Slingshot and Xnet have told me. I'm starting to grim out about it. The problem is that I can't migrate my orcon+ to a normal orcon over telecom because Orcon won't do this if you are in an Orcon+ area.

Basically what I need is a good sized cap... 25GB from Slingshot sounded good... as were there 1-7am free periods and data bundles.

I've got flatmates... and although it's not really going to be a problem I would just rather the data be capped and drop speed to 64Kbps if the limit is reached.

Not sure how that helps either? I've had a look through all of those. Are they supposed to be related?

I can't be the only person on Orcon+ that has tried to change to VF Red?

Not sure how any of these relates to what he wants to do, which is basically switch from Orcon+ to Vodafone Red network. Although he did mention about going to Slingshot so maybe trying to warn him about that?

As for avoiding Orcon I havent really had any issues with them except from when I first joined. Although this traffic shaping they are doing with rapidshare is starting to annoy me.

But that's off topic, I guess he just wants to know what to do to switch :-) Would be interesting to find out as I'm on Orcon's network :-)

Hm, sorry if I'm reviving an old thread.. all you need is to call up Orcon and ask for your ASID number (Vodafone call it the FBN number)

Its the same both ways, so if your switching from Vodafone Red Network to the Orcon+ network you'll need a FBN number from Vodafone.

It's not that old... and if that is how to do it I'm going to think about moving to VF. Only because I really would like a cap.

Have you had experience doing this? When I rang Slingshot they had no idea about how to do this, though that is hardly surprising, they don't seem very on to it.

Or I could just keep my fingers crossed that orcon might come out with a better pricing structure. I've had good support from them, apart from being told that my linksys modem won't work with their network. Slingshot was terrible, but I always knew that they have bad customer support... but really good plans.

As long as slingshot know what their doing, they can move you with the ASID/FBN number.

They're telling you that you need to move to Telecom because when you signed up for an Orcon+ plan your phone line was connected to Orcon's equipment and they aren't able to locate it from Telecom's database.

The ASID/FBN number is a unique identifier for your phone line and if they have that then they'll be able to locate/move it.

Slingshot may have cheaper rates with a higher data cap, but just remember they have to pay for it and if your not paying them enough their international bandwidth will be limited which in turn limits your speed.

And presuming the ASID is the 7 or 8 digit number entitled the "AS" beside the "LLUNAR", you can obtain that by logging into Orcon's control panel, going down to "My Services > LLU", then choosing "Usage", and there should be a huge string above the table with a 4 digit number preceeded by "llunar:" and a 7+ digit number preceeded by "as:"
