I just want to write a quick post to say a huge thanks to Snap for my recent interactions with their very impressive service.

I changed from Orcon to Snap when we moved house for their Naked DSL offering, which went very smoothly, and they were very quick and organised about getting things going. Getting a /29 added to my account and routed down my ADSL line was painless.

Now the real reason for my posting... I'm on site at a client's premises for the next day to cut them over to a new network topology, mostly provided by Snap. I can't say much about the situation, but a particular large company was making it difficult to get the last office online with Snap ADSL, which has finally been resolved after Mark Petrie himself got involved and sorted it out (actually doing the technical work.. not just doing "boss" type stuff).

Thanks again guys, that's stellar customer support. :)

If anyone wants a reason to consider Snap for their connectivity, this is just one!

I should probably know but what's a /29 ?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Subnet mask. I love explaining this :)

/29 = 29 bits of a network address that can't change. An IP address has 32 bits, so the last 3 bits can change.

On your LAN you'll usually have a /24, or: 255.255.255.0 That means you'll have x.y.z.0 thru x.y.z.255

For a /29, it's 255.255.255.248, which is x.y.z.0 thru x.y.z.7 (and 8-15, 16-23, 24-31, 32-39, etc etc.)

It can be represented as an example, ether: 192.168.1.0/24 or 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 .

You got it :)

edit: well, technically 6, but because I can cheat a bit with creative IP assignment on the firewall, I can use the network and broadcast addresses too.

The news gets even better... The difficult site ended up getting a special purpose DSLAM installed, just for us. Distance to the 'exchange' is about 50cm :)

Sadly, the DSLAM was overloading the DSL modem(s).. but no worry, Mark sorted out a special firmware for the DSLAM that lowers the signal strength! :)

Mark can do some pretty interesting things with his iPhone. I'll pass this info along to him and use it as an excuse for some office beers at 5pm on Monday :)

Ralph! Can I pop down there one day for a visit? Now that Microsoft guys have moved out from the building, what did you do to them to chase them out?
