Mentioned here too

A third player - New Zealand Communications - is close to naming its launch date later this year.

On March 11 - two days before the XT launch - the company intends to release details of its own network including its brand name.

The company, which is built around radio frequency allocations to Maori, has been aiming for years to compete with Vodafone and Telecom. Plans took off last year when Trilogy International Partners invested in the company.

Spokeswoman Bryony Hilless said the company would focus on offering value rather than branding.

Sounds good.  At last, somebody is looking to provide a decent offering to this sizeable yet underserved market.

For all those mobile phone luddites like me who prefer the enormous battery life of a 2G phone over the latest 3G models which suck your battery dry in just 1 or 2 days, NZ Comms will be perfect.  If they can offer decent savings for Voice Calls and TXT compared to the big boys, I (and many other people I know) will sign up like a shot.

Not to say I won't look at getting a HSDPA Data Card to take advantage of either the XT Network or Voda 900MHz, but I just don't see the point in shelling out for 3G phones for our family.

I'm actually getting tired of waiting, if NZ Comms do not come out with something shortly, the XT network is looking like a great move.

Why don't you. As far as I am concerned if they undercut the incumbents and offer reasonable coverage they can have my business.
