Which ISP would you recommend for Hamilton, Chartwell area, for (a) reliability (b) good customer service (c) reasonable speed (currently I'm 256kbs, so I expect anything is going to be a big improvement!)?Probably < 3GB/month traffic. I want to get phone and internet from the same provider and don't want anything to do with Telecom.

I'm unhappy with the reliability and customer service from Ihug so I'm looking to switch to a new ISP.

All providers seem to have problems with performance, but it looks to me like Orcon and Xnet are amongst the best & I like the fact that their staff seem to be participating in these groups to help users out.

Reading the newsgroups suggests that location matters a bit. http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps says it will be April 2010 before ADSL2+ will be in my area (Chartwell, Hamilton) -- i'm not really sure if that matters (currently using a Wireless system).

How much data do you use per month on average? Are you looking for Phone Line + ADSL or just Naked ADSL?

I'd say not much traffic compared to what some are reporting here. Say 1GB/month on average. Never much more than 3GB. Most of large files would be software updates. Very little streaming video. Largely building and maintaing my website. Some people seem to be suggesting that the uncapped plans use different traffic management. I do most of my work in the evenings.. 7..10pm. I'd be very unhapppy with dialup performance at that time of day.

I don't understand the pros/cons of each.

I'm guessing the difference is where the phone "exchange" lies. For naked ADSL I guess I'll be turning phone calls to VOIP with a box in my house (that's what I have currently via Wired Country). I think Phone+ADSL means I have a filter and the telephone co takes care of turning phone calls into VOIP. I don't use fax or have a monitored alarm.

Is there a reason I should choose one over the other?
