1.Why 2degrees?

In 1929 Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy proposed the idea that everyone on the planet is separated by six steps.  The premise became known as ‘six degrees of separation’.

In 2006 Microsoft conducted a planetary scale experiment to test the theory.  They studied 180 million people and 30 million instant messages and found that on average people were separated by 6.6 steps.

Respected academics and journalists have covered the story and in 2006 proposed that New Zealand enjoys one of the shortest social distances in the world - more like 2, rather than 6 steps.

2.How will it work?

Pop in your new 2degrees SIM card to any unlocked phone and you’re good to go.

3.Will I be able to bring my mobile number with me?

Yes, you can stay on your current number or you can pick your own. 2degress will offer numbers in the 022 range.

4.Will my handset work?

Most GSM and WCDMA handsets will work on this network.

5.What frequencies will 2degrees work on?

The 2degrees network uses works on 900/1800 MHz (GSM/GPRS) and 2100 MHz (WCDMA) frequencies.

6.Will I be able to get a fancy new handset as part of the deal?

2degress is planning to have a range of handsets from leading brand but no model lineup has been released yet.

7.Will I be able to surf, TXT and download email on my mobile?

Yes.

8.Will 2degrees offer lower rates than existing mobile companies?

The company has not release information about mobile plans, but promised to "set new benchmarks in New Zealand."

9.What will your coverage be like?

2degrees coverage is said to reach about 97% of where New Zealanders are.

10.Will I be able to travel overseas with 2degrees?

Yes. Roaming will be available to the major travel destinations visited by Kiwis.

11.What about customer service?

The company made a point of clarifying it will be free, and the team is based in Auckland.

12.Who is behind 2degrees?

2degrees is a partnership of Maori and international investors that specialize in mobile communications.

Waatea News: "Bill Osborne says unlike Telecom and Vodafone, 2degrees doesn't have to be all things to all people and it can tailor its offerings for specific groups such as Maori"

So what will the second-class citizens of this country be missing out on?

Guessing the 2100 MHz WCDMA will be in the cities.

So therefore:

Will twodegrees have WCDMA in the country and if so what frequency will they use?

They have a roaming agreement with Vodafone, so likely 900MHz 3G where VF has that coverage, otherwise 2100MHz.

So 2degrees are going to base pricing on race?

lol, what a joke.

Why divide people into racial "groups" and tailor pricing base on race? I don't see any logic to that...

If that concerns you then you should probably do a little research into the history behind Hautaki.

They received a 5% discount during the 2100MHz spectrum auctions which is the only reason Econet partnered with them. In return for this discount from the Government there were many pledges made to deliver a better way of life to Maori people, particularly in regards to technology.

Ridiculous isn't it?
I have to agree - it's racist, pure and simple. And there is no other way to disguise it.
