I'm getting conflicting information about the preferred way to change ISP's when I've got broadband.  One company says that I shouldn't tell the ISP I'm leaving (Orcon in this case) which seems a bit funny, but since I've never done this, what's the best way?  Thanks.

with your fingers crossed and a silent prayer, but seriously dont tell Orcon your leaving as they will cancel it and when your new isp sends a order through to Telecom to change providers there wont be anything there to change and thats when your problems start, only tell Orcon when you are connected to your new provider that you want your account cancelled.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Thanks, I wasn't sure but the way you suggested sounds fine.

Don't tell Orcon whatever you do! If Orcon finds out, you will find your tyres slashed, all your clothes out on the front lawn in a pile, and a pick axe through the back window of your car.

Too late! :P

Serously though, timestyles, why do you want to leave and what can we do to make you stay?

IMHO Let the old BB company know in case there's any way they can convince you to stay. There's no obligation for you to do so but there might be a misunderstanding on your side that they might be able to rectify.

The new company then fills out an order to get the Broadband switched over on your line. Then to ring the old company back to ensure they still aren't charging you. Make sure you let them know what date the change over is occuring so they can adjust your billing accordingly.

Believing that your old company is going to do anything at all untrusty towards you just because your switching your services over is a little silly. It's unprofessional and quite frankely fodder for a law suit or some other action from some regulartory body.

1: Sign up with new provider 12-15 days before the end of the current billing period with your old provider, this gives you (hopefully) enough time for everything to be switched over before starting the next month.

2: Once you're connected and working on the new provider ring the old provider to inform them you have left and to close your account. Theoretically you shouldn't have to do this but a) it's polite and b) just in case the automatic notification behind the scenes magic didn't work or your old provider decided to ignore it and charge you for an extra/next month anyway.

3: Profit

Shot ragnor, you are sharp alright.

If all else fails then contact your new ISP and get them to notify Orcon that you have changed. I believe that they have some notification thingy they do between ISP's.
