The reason I ask is because we received a phone call last night from Slingshot offering us a deal which included upgrading to ADSL2+, but according to the Telecom ADSL2+ website our area isnt going to be upgraded till 2011. If this is the case then it's a pretty poor move on Slingshots behalf really, but I may be wrong.

Were you offered "The Next Big Thing"?

That is on ASDL2+ via Vodafones new network.

Oh ok that may have been it. I wasnt actually the one who took the call, but it was to do with moving all our phone services over to it and ncreasing our bandwidth from 4mbps to 11mbps for $90 a month. If it is on vodafones network then thats cool, I was just a little confused and worried that the people I am currently staying with may have been taken for a ride. Call me a pesimist and you would be right :)

Yep that sounds like our product.

Big Thing #2 is $89.95 for homeline, broadband and a heap of phone features.

Check it out at www.slingshot.co.nz/bigthing

Improving your sync speed with the exchange probably won't improve your percieved speed when accessing content hosted overseas as this is generally limited by your ISP's available international bandwidth.

Ping times are better but don't start dreaming you will get 11mb to Rapaidshare type sites.

I wouldn't expect much of a difference in ping unless you never got interleaving turned off on your current connection.

What area are you from?
I'd be supprised if any unbundled exchanges did not have Telecom ADSL2+ there too

I am staying in Bucklands Beach in Manukau (around Half Moon Bay area). I just had a look on the Telecom site where you check for ADSL2+ coverage and typed in the address, but who knows, it may be that the site hasnt been updated.

Howick and Pakaranga were some of the first exchanges upgraded to ADSL2+ the telecom wholesale map site shows they were upgraded in 2008 and 2007.

Check in your router/modem's admin ui and see what it's protocol it's connected with on the status screens.

Yeah the Howick exchange has been upgraded, but apparently the roadside cabinet we are on is projected to be connected around Jan 2011. I'll have a check when i get home thou to see what protocol it's running as they are ringing back tonight to see if these people want the plan.

You will be connected to ADSL2+ equipment in the exchange but the distance is hampering your speed.  You are probably about 3km away from the exchange (in length of copper cable).

Basically on your current connection with Slingshot provided over Telecom Wholesale gear you won't get a better sync speed until the cabinet upgrade is done.

Even worse on Slingshot over the Vodafone network you won't get a better sync speed until the cabinet is done, and vodafone have permission to install gear in the cabinet and they actually install the gear.

Telecom is using 2/3 of the space in the cabinets for their gear.  Orcon, Vodafone and whoever else will have to fight over the remaining 1/3 and pay rental to house their gear in the cabinets.  The rental rate is to be determined by the commerce commision, if it's not low enough Orcon and Vodafone won't go ahead with rolling out gear in cabinets.

The cabinet will shorten the distance significantly which should allow you to sync at 10Mbit+ depending on how far away from the cabinet you are (closer is beter of course).

Awesome, cheers for that. They teach you the technical side of things but the political side of things is something they tried to stay away from at university (for obvious reasons of course)
