Last week 4 Geekzoners visited 2degrees for a couple of presentations and a tour of their Auckland facilities.

Have a read of the write-up here and then use this thread for related discussion.

Correct, phones etc were left at Reception. Very data-centreish looking though.

Shame they withdrew their offer ofa GZ'ers touring their datacentre cause their too busy during their launch... Hopefully their launch isn't as badly planned hehe.

But seriously, am looking forward to the networking evening and real competition in the mobile market. Go 2degrees, or have we decided to use 2d or 2o?

Man I would kill to get into that tour, got a lot of questions to ask and I wanna see what mobiles he has on offer. Used to be a subscriber to Starhub (Singapore) which is the current CEO's pervious job as president. It was a great telco provider and I've got high hopes for this new company.

Looking forward to the opportunity to ask 2degrees a few questions. An interesting year for mobile telephony in NZ!

Question:  With 2Degrees proposed Bill and Keep mobile local phone service, how will that interact with telemarketing
calls, will I be able to reject calls that are either missing caller id, or which have forged caller id?

Question: Will I be able to request refunds for when people misdial my phone?  In other words, for situations where
someone else has dialled my phone number by mistake?

From the write up:

"....and if they are able to deliver on what was presented to us, I feel they will be a formidable opponent to the two already well established incumbents"

Were you given some insight as to what they plan to deliver over and above what Telecom / Vodafone provide either in terms of new technology or pricing?

Their technology is going to be on par at worst, their pricing is their focus and they sound very committed to really making a difference. They have me convinced :-)

One point to note, at launch in August the network will be 2G everywhere (97% of where we live work play blah blah) with selected 3G sites in the 3 main cities. By January 2010ish the 97% cover will be 3G . . .

Ha ha, no specifics just a very convincing spiel by the people there that are in a position to know what they are talking about.

We are all going to have to wait and see but I am confident we will see change.

2 degrees have done a lot of market research, they've identified needs in the mobile market, and have designed their network to support not only demand at launch, but future proofed it for later growth.  That may sound like marketing speak, but that's the general impression I got during the presentations.

They've identified a stack of different things to give them a competitive edge, realising that a cool brand alone won't cut it.

I'm hopeful of great things, time will tell.

So, asked NBR, will Two Degrees ride to the rescue with its August launch, and offer mobile data at reasonable rates?

No.

Mr Reynolds says, “You’ve got to operate in the market you’re in”.

So they aren't targeting mobile data, big deal. It has been widely rumoured they are after the bread and butter voice calling market. Their presentation made it very clear NZers TXT so much because voice costs so much, their plan is to change that.
