Im on an Orcon connection at work for testing some gear but having problems accessing Orcons SMTP server (smtp.orcon.net.nz or mail.orcon.net.nz port 25).
I cant ping the server and unable to telnet into it or get a client to connect to it.

I get :

qespam@linux:~$ telnet smtp.orcon.net.nz 25
Trying 219.88.242.10...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

qespam@linux:~$ ping smtp.orcon.net.nz
PING smtp.orcon.net.nz (219.88.242.10) 56(84) bytes of data.
From mail.orcon.net.nz (219.88.242.10) icmp_seq=1 Destination Port Unreachable
From mail.orcon.net.nz (219.88.242.10) icmp_seq=2 Destination Port Unreachable
From mail.orcon.net.nz (219.88.242.10) icmp_seq=3 Destination Port Unreachable
^C
--- smtp.orcon.net.nz ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 0 received, +3 errors, 100% packet loss, time 3004ms

The boss said it has happened before and he contacted Orcon and eventualy got told it was fixed but he didnt actually test it as he found a different work around at the time. Wasnt told what was causing it either.

Any ideas ?

And yes, Ive checked the firewall etc at my end, its set to allow SMTP out.

Try 587 ? They may require usage of the submission port now, since theoretically external mail servers should be the only ones that require 25.

edit: although, the ping results are interesting. they may just be blocking icmp somewhere though.

Assuming its not your end, Ive seen Orcon do that when their mail system decides you have become a spammer (likely for a legit reason, compromised mail server or client) and they block your IP, had it a couple times.

Im just using a standard client (Thunderbird) - not trying to run a server.

Cool, sorry, I wasn't trying to say you were. Can you try telnetting to port 587 ?

Heh... because they can better apply restrictions and policies around it - must be SSL, must authenticate, must be accessed from an Orcon IP, etc etc. That way they can restrict incoming port 25 for external unauthenticated mail servers, thereby reducing the likelihood that their smtp server can be abused for spamming by their customers.

It's what 587 is for :)

LennonNZ is looking into it for me anyway :)

He said pretty much the same as dan, thing is that the line only gets used for doing Windows Updates on fresh machines...so where the potential spam/virus is coming into it I have no idea.

I'll wait for Craigs response and go from there

Thanks guys
