Ok, I went to Vodafone on Broadway, New Market. about to send my phone in for repair for the 3rd time (this is an ongoing saga with vodafone, other phone was sent back 4 times before i got this one). anyways, I decide to do a check to see what networks my phone picked up before it was sent back, because after all, New Market was the first place my non-xt compatable phone found telecom's network. It finished searcing and it showed:
Vodafone NZ
Vodafone NZ (3G)
Telecom NZ (3G) - (interesting because my phone is a sony ericsson G502 running on GSM 900/1800/1900   & UMTS 2100 MHZ. )
NZ COMMS (great gsm signal everywhere i go. :D)
& NZ COMMS (3G) (:O... first time i had seen NZ COMMS with 3G logo next to its name.... )

my question is... will 2 degree's have 3G constantly when they launch? because New Market is the only place I have seen it with 3G before. same with telecoms network also...)

2 Degrees says they will 3G at launch - probably not 100% of their coverage will be 3G, but they will have both GSM and WCDMA.

As for your phone showing Telecom 3G, remember that there is a small number of WCDMA 2100 MHz sites on the XT Network, so probably this is one of them.

you dont by any chance happen to have a map of where i can get coverage for the 2100mhz towers do you? because i dont really want to be getting a new phone if telecom's pricing does become unbareable to resist.

For XT you really need 850 MHz WCDMA otherwise you will just suffer from a poor experience coverage wise.

At launch in August 2degrees will only have 3G on some of their sites and 2G roaming onto Vodafone outside the 3 main cities. By Januaryish they will have 3G everywhere.

when you say roaming.... we dont have to pay fee's or higher call/txt/data rates when roaming on vodafone do we? or will  it be treated like using 2 degrees still...?

Have they only just worked out that people are going to want 3G data/services? And customer's will just complain if they have to roam to vodafone to get 3G. Are they going to use 3G 900?

3G is still a small market compared to Calls and TXT.  2Degrees does not have to be everything to all customers like Telecom and Vodafone. I would miss my 3G, but I only use it for mobile e-mail anyway.

No, there will be numerous reasons but as stated below it isn't everything to everyone. They are going to have EDGE everywhere from memory.

Roaming to Vodafone won't healp, read my post again, that isn't until January when they will essentially "launch" 3G

I'd say most likely all their sites are already 3G capable. I noticed during their build, a site would go live with 2G + 3G. Then a wee while later, it would be 2G only. So I'm guessing they have built it all out & tested with both 2G & 3G, but will hit the 3G switch a bit later.

Hmm EDGE you say? Interesting... I'm currently looking at one of those cheap Chinese phones and as some may know these tend to lack 3G. They do sometimes have EDGE do. Bit useless here in NZ given that Vodafone decided not to turn it on. I'm not a high data user, but I've found GPRS a bit slow even for casual browsing and particularly sending or receiving a large MMS. But it sounds like EDGE may be useful after all if 2 degrees have it. Of course it all depends on their costs. To be honest, I've never really used the internet that much because of the $$$ expensive data charges for casual/infrequent usage
