Well, i was doing some testing the other day with some equiptment, and noticed something.
We havent setup our phone line, so when it when to our "voicemail" it said "extension 942409xx was unavaliable"

im sure it only says that type of stuff when you are on a PBX type setup...

Could someone clarify?

On Orcon landline the voicemail always says Extension until you access their voicemail and set up your greeting.. Which makes me suspect that they use a PBX rather than a real CO switch..

I believe Orcon use a Siemens Softswitch for call control and Asterisk for Voicemail. A lot of commercial voicemail/messaging platforms have licencing fees that would make your eyes water, and prob 95% of people just use it like a glorified $50 answerphone.

These days a 'real CO switch' is open to interpretation. EG while Telecom's Neax network could be considered 'real CO switches' they are very old and it would never make commercial sense to install one now! You'd prob get closer to the telco 5 nines from a cluster of HA Asterisk boxes. :)

I wouldnt be surprised if orcon's pots lines are just hooked up to voip ata's at the exchange which run to a cluster of asterisk boxes. I reckon xnet's vfx would probably be the same.

Well if I were them, thats how i would do it although probably something a bit more complicated than asterisk.

Also i am guessing that they use the term 'extension' as the system is geared up for providing centrex services

Bascially yes, however the bunch of ATA's are inbedded inside DSLAM line cards.

We use a Siemens softswitch platform however rather than Asterisk.

VFX runs on a Broadsoft switch.. Offers a bit more functionality than Asterisk! :-)

VFX also don't provide a PSTN over copper service like Orcon do. Orcon deliver a dialtone to your house over the Telecom copper lines. If you want a phone service from VFX you will need an ATA or VoIP phone on your premises.

There are pros and cons to both methods but delivering voice over copper means no change is required to the house wiring to support the phones service.
