So, from say 6am till about 5pm my pings are nice.

Example:

7:30am (this morning)

Pinging www.orcon.net.nz [60.234.4.77] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 60.234.4.77: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=60
Reply from 60.234.4.77: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=60
Reply from 60.234.4.77: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=60

6:18pm (now)

Pinging www.orcon.net.nz [60.234.4.77] with 32 bytes of data:

Interleaving is off but pings are going silly.

Could be exchange and backhaul congestion, or overloaded handover links... Are you on the Orcon+ network or a standard plan?

Either way you're on a residential best effort shared network connection. You don't get a SLA or guaranteed speeds, you have to pay "business prices" for those sorts of things.

Sitting there being pedantic over a 5ms jitter of course

Really Im on slingshot and my ping at 1am to 60.234.4.77 is 49ms
or to slingshots homepage its still 48-49ms

I never see anything below 30ms

Google is at least 200ms away (slingshot) at any time, yet if i rdp into the terninal server at work and ping google through the orcon connection at work its only 169-176ms away.

For the poster, i would also suggest it could be a congested cabinet, backhaul or the extra traffic during peak time to the server being pinged.

Not exactly, just wondering what the cause was, has been fine up untill about 2-3 days ago.

having that extra 20-30ms makes it as if interleaving is back on and makes playing games in Australia a nightmare going from a healthy 60-70ms to 90-100ms

bit of a thread grave dig here but are you still having the same issue and what are your local speeds like at the two different times.

If you notice that your national speeds suck at the same time as your latency is higher then you're looking at exchange congestion.

Download speeds are fine not affected.

It's ok now, I have another line in the house connected to Telecoms Big Time which actually gives me better pings than my orcon connection, suprising I know.

I might drop Orcon shortly and move over to Maxnet for my high speed connection though.
