Hi guys,

I watched a 2D cell site on top of a light poll go up a few months ago, and the big box put on the pavement etc and all wired in, but the coverage from a few hundred metres away is exactly the same as the current crap Vodafone coverage.

Does this mean both signals are still coming from Vodafones network and this cell site has not been turned on yet?

It's at the top of Parnell road, opposite Ivory Longue and right outside the massive church Sir Ed had his funeral at.

If it has a triangle orange sticker like a radioactive sign on it.. And its in a really inconsiderate place.

Say hello to your local NZ Communications/2Degrees new tower.

I don't mind competition. But some serious backhanding must have gone on to get resource consents to put some of the towers where they are (in front of schools, churches, hospital here, middle of the footpath beside police station, middle of footpath ANYWHERE) without the need to mask them as something else like most the hidden vodafone/telecom ones I am aware of :(

Ah right. Fair enough. So complete opposite then.

The other lot must have feared backlash so spent large on the install to mask them as lamps/trees/hide behind trees/hedges/fake chimneys/clock towers away from schools etc.

Whereas theres nothing stopping them in the middle of a footpath or infront of a nature reserve memorial instead of behind the treeline surrounding it. gg govt :(

Actually I think its mostly a matter of timing. Most of VF & Telecom's sites were built before these regs came in. I seen them build roadside/pavement sites since the regs came out but not very many. 2degrees on the other hand has built most of their sites since the regs came into effect...

Good thing that these regs came in otherwise there would be no sites going in with an endless stream of holdup from luddites abusing the RMA to stall things...

Like the ones at waiheke Island here in Auckland who want to have all cell sites removed and go back to tin cans and string..

I guess it will come down to how long its been there. If its like another providers rollout, theres a bunch of contractors at play. Housing HW install. Equipment install, power testing. Configuration pre switch on. Then flick the switch and Signal testing

Apologise for going off track with topic not realising this was the NZComms area :P thought you were monitoring a vodafone signal to see when it goes on as apposed to realising its a NZComms broadcast that needs a different scan done.

Im just touching about some of the towers sticking out more more than usual :P. Number of places you can go 'oh, where'd that tower come from?' once you notice it. Then there's others that are blatantly obvious and only then you notice it the other hidden lamp post or similar towers within 50-100m become apparent :)

The site you are talking about is a Telecom site (which is ironic given the above discussion with Oblivian :-)

How are you measuring the 2degrees coverage?

Hey Geekzoners - sorry it took a wee while to get back on this thread, but the site you are talking about is not ours.
We do have some sites in the Parnell area, but they are about 700mtrs further away from the one you have been discussing.

Cheers!

My iPhone allows me to select the 2D network but gives a error, it still shows the signal strength bar although
it seems to be exactly the same as the VF signal strength hence why I thought they were the same signal/tower i.e. roaming onto VF.

Please tell me those sites arn't live yet, otherwise your coverage is as bad as VF's at my house (I live in a block of flats at 17 birdwood cresent)

I and a few other here were hoping to get better reception...

How would you be able to measure coverage without a 2DM sim anyway?

I guess we to start taking "trusted" status out of some people. The site is not even a 2Degress site.

How people jump to conclusions, eh?

Yeah totally my mistake I shouldn't have assumed it was a 2 Degrees site, I didn't realise Telecom use the same top of the light poll antennas as 2 degrees.

Now I'm thinking a lot of the sites I assumed to be 2D perhaps are XT. Sigh. Sorry Freitasm my bad I should never assume as fact.

Vodafone and Telecom masts on lamp posts look the same they are almost identical

2D masts are very different the antenna panels stand out like dogs bits
