Is it just me, or is YouTube one of the slowest loading sites I have come across.

The HTTP content is fine.. but when it comes to buffering the flv's and stuff, it's just rediculously slow.. even at 1am in the morning. It keeps having to stop because it cant buffer fast enough.
Tried different computers (wireless and wired) and still no better. Some days (very rarely) it can do OK and buffer a couple of seconds ahead of the video. But usually not.

I can downloaded files at like 1.9mb/s but I can't even load a video faster than my mate on ADSL1

Un-freaking-believable.

EDIT: Bad typo - that's what I get for staying up all night.

I generally havent had any problems with Orcon and Youtube - its usually buffered a few seconds ahead of whats playing so no issues. Altho yesterday it seemed slow...but Ive been having issues with Google related sites the last few days (seems to come and go).

Oh okay. YouTube's been rather flakey ever since we got Orcon+

Google has been functioning without a problem (Search, Gmail)

Yes YouTube is shockingly bad.  I can't watch YouTube videos in the evenings without waiting a few minutes for it to load before starting.  But one time I was home during a weekday and it was very fast.  I could almost stream some of their HD videos.

I get download speeds from NZ sites or local caches of up to 12Mbps.  Comedy Central clips load very fast (I assume they are coming from a local CDN node).  Most other sites are fine.

But YouTube, utterly miserable.

I was an orcon customer for over 3 years, out in Manukau Heights. I left them last month as me and all the flatmates all noticed orcons speed was crap.I am now a Telecom Business customer, and omg I cant believe how much faster telecom's service is, compared to orcon, and I am actually saving money using telecom..

Money? Telecom? saving?

I never thought those three words would be used in the same sentence together

Haha, yeah.

Im actually thinking about moving providers because of it; I know Telecom has a pretty good connection to YouTube. My mate can buffer a whole video on a ADSL connection, faster than I can on my ADSL2+ connection with Orcon.

So Telecom must have actually done something right there..

But we'll see. Other than the youtube thing though, everything else seems to be stable at the moment. Havent had any down time with Orcon+ which is actually a big step up from Slingshot and the likes.

So im in two minds, but I basically live on YouTube these days (whether it be uploading content, or watching)

so thats where im at.

I'm at least glad (or feeling positive that it's not just me) at least that rules out my equipment being a problem etc.
Stil sucks though no matter which way you look at it.

Yes, Telecom seem to have some of the best service (fast international speeds, reliable connections, good quality toll calling sound) and also some of the best pricing around.

Some things like Go-Large and Yahoo integration were disasters at first but not everything is perfect and the target market also had a lot to do with Go Large (Warez, moviez, gamez, u are a piiirate)

I have not regretted my move to a Telecom Connection, I was never a telecom supporter, but if you go on a propper plan (i.e. dont expect awesome speeds or awesome youtube when on the Big Time Plan) but for example the Pro plans, or in my case, the Business Plans are really awesome.

And I'm getting 60gb per month with telecom business plan, overage at 2.67 plus gst per gig, a bit more then orcon's overage charge, but with orcon sometimes it was hard to use all of my cap as the speeds were so bad, atleast with telecom I get what I pay for. anyways..

and I only pay 110 per month incl gst for my above plan (60 gb per month, 3.00 incl gst per gb overage) business plan. Youtube streams HD content without buffering, i.e. the latest transformers 2 hd trailer streams instantly, and within watching the trailer you've used 50 plus meg easily.

that 110, is that including phone and stuff as well? im guessing not?

makes me want to move to Telecom now.. which I thought I would never say in my entire life.

The only problem with moving with them is; I won't get caller ID on my home phone :(

Only Orcon can offer me that at the moment :(

No homeline ontop, of which is only 42 something there odd, (i added the $10 package for voicemail, caller id, call waiting) brining it to 52 something odd.

I work from home, and as this is my residential address, they set me up a residential phone account, but I had to wait until that was provisioned in order to get business broadband added... well worth it, and I'm actually saving a bit of dosh from leaving orcon, I get less gigs, but so much better service. (i was with orcon for over 3 years.. so when i complained about speeds.. I just left as nothing changed in 3 months)

Just make sure you advise orcon that you wish to leave them, before u call telecom. as orcon have a 1 month leaving period, of which they will charge you 1 months normal rental unless u give them.. 1 month.. "yawn"

Oh far out.

Yeah, at the moment, we're paying $160.00 a month - including free national calling, caller ID, voice mail and all that jazz.

Might take a look at the business plans now, actually. See whats avaliable/worth my time..

Its just sad, because im on ADSL2+ and I don't think Telecom are able to offer that to me at the moment.. again, i think only Orcon can :(

PS: Thanks for the information about moving over, will definitely keep that in mind

Oooh, it seems Orcon ( http://www.orcon.net.nz ) have changed there prices, as Now it is cheaper then it was .. 6-7 weeks ago.. This is comparing what I have with telecom. in this case, (Orcon - Gold+, Add the Wireless Router, 60 GB . Overage at $2.00 Per gb incl gst

= 154.95
------------------------------------

(Telecom - Residential Phone line plus $10 smart package for all the services (voice mail, call waiting, caller id) , comes with a awesome wireless router, 60 gb. ) Overage at $3.00 per GB incl gst

Going off Telecom ( http://www.telecom.co.nz ),
basic home phone - http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/0,,100005-1007,00.html?link=pahl ,
smart phone services http://www.telecom.co.nz/smartphoneservices ,
Business Plans https://www.telecombusinesshub.co.nz/Internet/Broadband/Pages/Pricing.aspx

= $42.00 incl Gst for phone, $10.00 incl gst for Smart Phone Services, Business Broadband 60gb $109.95

= $161.95

------------------------

There you go, and for the very little difference there is in it now... the performance speaks louder then words.
