My father is keen to use 022 followed by his 7 digit home phone number on 2 Degrees if available.

It seems convenient, but are there any potential down sides to this?

I'm thinking in terms of privacy issues (number IS listed in white pages however), or potentially telemarketing abuse.

Just thinking aloud here - anyone know of reasons why one might NOT want to do this?

022 and four digits will not be available. You will need more digits.

He must have a longer home number than four digits anyway.

What privacy issues are there? A number is a number. Advertise it, or not, but numbers exist, and anyone is welcome to dial any number at random at any time (though the call itself may not be welcome).

Very convenient to have a number that is the same except for prefix, though in the past 'clever' numbers have just ended up being a headache to tell people.

My home number was the equivalent** of 4303540 (four, thirty, thirty five, forty). But anyone trying to write down "four, thirty, thirty five, forty" would just lunch it, time after time.

** actual digits were different, as someone else has that number now...

The only issue that will exist with 022 number ranges are with dialling these numbers from PBX's that haven't opened up the range.

Other than that I don't see any downsides at all..

anyone who hasn't updated their PBX or doesn't update their PBX very quickly after launch should look at getting a managed service PBX or something as there are network range changes all the time, just look at all the 028 ranges getting opened uprecently. Part of running a PBX is the ongoing maintinace and updates.

I'm hoping to get my home fone number on 2D but will have to wait until my SIM arrives to see. It's not available on Telecom and on Vodafone don't even try and ask..

Hi - I have my cell phone as 029 & then my business phone number. It's not caused me any problems and has only simplified telling people my contact details. There used to be an occasional request for confirmation that 029 was a valid number, but not for a while. Now with number portability & people not sure who's with Telecom or Vodafone, and soon to be 2 Degrees, it'll be less & less of an issue.
Having just spent a harrowing time looking over our family phone bill & trying to confirm who's friends may have changed networks & cost more on text plans I can see the logic of XT's unified billing across networks!

In Australia it's well known that 04 numbers are mobiles. Hopefully soon the same is understood in NZ. If it starts with 02 it's mobile.

Here's a true story that happened at my local library this year:
The customer asked why she is being charged $4 instead of $3 for her movie. The librarian explained that DVDs cost more. The customer responded "Dee-vee-dee? What's that?"

So yes, it is possible people won't know 022 is a mobile number.

Not quite so. 026 pager service, 028 non geographic numbers.
