To compare, Vodafone had 6 digit numbers on their 021 prefix, anyone know the reason 2Degrees is starting with 7 digits?

Telecom moved to 7 digits when they went 027.
Vodafone probably wish they had all 7 digits, as they now have a real mess of numbers.
I think it is a good logical decision, else you be stuck with only 1 million number choices.

Maybe as it gives them 10 times as many numbers to allocate its customers and its much easier to write rules for it..

Have you tried writing a digitmap which matches all 021 numbers without delays. Its ugly an long..

How crazy is the email I just got from 2talk about my 028+6-digit number:

As of the 1 September 2009 your 2talk 02889 number will be updated to
include an extra digit. This is a regulatory requirement imposed by
the NZ number administration body. You will need to use this digit
when dialing your 02889 number from outside the 2talk network. However,
you do not need to change any of the settings on your phone or device
you use to access 2talk and can continue to use your existing 02889
number and password to access 2talk live.

And they are adding the extra digit after the 028 89 (Becomes 028 899) - Surely it would be easier to add it on the end!

I'm pretty sure they allocated numbers to people in the 1st place too short which didn't ahear to the NAD rules and had up to 31/08/09 to get it fixed. I don't know the reason why they did in the 1st place but someone on here will know...

I would've thought they'd start with 6 digits, then move to 7, then 8 etc etc.

Could they allocate a 6 digit or would that break everything?

No, becuase if, say you allocated 022 123 456, then you run into issues if you then issue numbers like 022 123 456 x

This is why Vodafone is now having to issue some 021 + 8 digits, as they can only do so in the 0210 range as 0211,0212 are already allocated to 021+7 and 0213 to 0219 are allocated to 021+6

You would then limit your number ranges, which 022x lot's would you choose, as you could not use all of them. Some would need to be held for future 7 or 8 digit ranges.

However in answer to your question, as the range is set by NAD as 7 digit, then they cannot now do 6,7,8 ranges anyway.

Actually the NAD limits the minimum number length (to ensure 'efficient' use of number resources). Longer numbers are OK. So 7 is the min, but 8 would be OK too.

I do. The Vodafone mix of number that they have now is plan crazy. It seems to follow the British number plan format of any number length will do. They should have changed it all to 7 digits when they took over from Bellsouth as everyone else has done..

Its not really a big deal having multiple lengths IMO - the 8 digits appearing out of nowhere was a bit of a shock to peoples CRM systems but now they are working with them its all good.
