Can someone quickly explain porting to me?

If I want to use my current vodafone 021 number as my 2Deg number I have to port it to 2deg via the website right? (when I receive my SIM that is). The part I don't know is if I do that, can I still use that 021 number for both networks or is it then only a 2deg number?

Also if someone else txts me on a ported 2degree 021 number, are they charged to send their txt to a 2deg or vodafone number? The people that txt me are on Vodafone with TXT2000 - would it be included or charged at their 20c?

Reason I want details is I live in Maungaraki Lower Hutt where there currently isn't 2deg coverage and only skimpy Vodafone coverage. I want to change to 2deg but obviously need coverage at home, and as I understand it there's no 'fall back' to the vodafone network from 2deg if within the Wellington Region (only if roaming outside it).

Please let me know if I have the wrong end of the stick somewhere!

I stand to be corrected, But I'm pretty sure you can only have your number on Vodafone OR 2degrees (OR Telecom for that matter), I know what you are saying though...

Your number sits on ONE network only. If you port it to 2D then its a 2D number, and no longer a Vodafone number.

When people from another network contact you, they will be going off net, so if their included SMS/minutes are to THEIR network only, they will pay extra for the privilege.

They won't know till they check they account if you don't tell them, or they can SMS a number to '300' to find out what network it is on.

Yes, the number can be ported via the website, once it's opened again. It can only be on either 2degrees or Vodafone; you cannot have it on both networks simultaneously.

TXT2000 applies only to Vodafone on-net destinations, which we most decidedly are not.

The national roaming includes "exclusion zones". Selected Vodafone LACs contained within our coverage cannot be roamed onto.

Huh? Does that mean I will or won't have coverage in Maungaraki? Am I an 'exclusion zone'? I am aware that there is a 2Deg tower planned near my house - just don't know when. Thanks for the info though - and dammit I though I may not get the best of both worlds with having a number on both networks - just had to check

Makes me wonder how many other ported numbers I've lost money on by txting them!
