So when 2degrees announced their pricing i'm like right, time to pay out my contact with voda and leave them and their crap service forever.

BUT 2degress has 'cheap' data rates right? no. 50c per meg?? really?? so how about matching vodafone at least $10 for 100 megs, or $1 for 10 megs per  day as you use it.

On 2degress it would cost $5 for 10 megs, $50 for 100 megs and so on, which is 5 times more expensive than Voda.

So I have to stay with vodafone... sigh.

Or am I missing something??

No you are not missing anything. 2degrees are focusing on certain customers to start off with, and that is obviously not including those that want to use a bit of data. I would expect better pricing when they announce plans, or finish their own network role out.

Lets hope so, I would move in a second if the data was not an issue.

I would move in a second if they were able to offer a bestmate/family service.

I got my free sim, put it in to My Sony Ericsson W580i and was connected on edge in no time. I checked my email via gmail app on my phone, eplied to an email, checked my website worked ok (which is designed to viewed on a mobile) and checked a traffic camera. Total cost $0.03 which was pretty good. Yes VF $1 for 10M per day is good. But if you have a 2G or 2.5G and stick to the mobile sites m.trademe.co.nz m.facebook m.twitter etc your usage will be pretty small. A year ago VF were charging $10 per Mbyte so things have come a long way. 2D have it about right for the target market.
I guess EDGE phones are thin on the ground in NZ as none of the other had it so I doubt there will be many takers. I was using GPRS on VF and the site I mentioned were usable.

My thoughts exactly! I rang them earlier today, and the customer services rep said they wanted to get the basics done right first before offering things like data plans. CSR's arent always accurate, but thats what he said. Interesting, eh? I recently got a new vodafone sim card, and it has 63mb of free data on it still, so Im going to stay with vodfone for at least another few $20 topups.. and hopefully by then, I can kiss them goodbye. I got the $2 sim card already. :)

This would have been my last topup if 2degrees had good data rates.

Quite right, if you only use about 500kb a day in data, then 2d is going to be cheaper than Vodafones and Telecoms $1 capped at 10mb plan.

From memory, after abut 100kb of data (please correct me if i'm wrong), you have reached your $1 cap on Vodafone and Telecom (10c for every 10kb).

There would be very few handsets manufactued in the past 2-3 years that don't have EDGE.

Remember it's extremely old technology now however it's takeup was extremely low.

From a couple of spec sheets it appears that EDGE gets grouped under GPRS specs and EDGE does not get it's own "tick box". So if a phone only states GPRS then it might include EDGE.

You can never have enough Volvos!

From the link above.
"You can use data while you are overseas but it is a bit pricey. It costs $30/MB and is charged in 5KB increments with a minimum charge of 15c. Our advice, steer clear of the data!"

I suspect that they haven't got much control over this . Some higher up in the food chain is pulling the strings..

as opposed to say Vodafone (select data roaming)

or telecom

Roaming data is expensive on all networks.
