Hi,

I've just been connected to Orcon plus. It's the first time I've had broadband to this house.

Below is stats from the router. Although 2.29Mbps isn't really slow, I was hoping for a bit more out of Orcon +. Am I being unrealisitic? I was recently staying with my in-laws and they were getting about 4.5Mbps on just a standard Adsl 1 setup with Telecom.
I'm located in Manly, Hibiscus Coast.
Am planning to ring Orcon but am wondering if anyone here can see anything unusual with what I've posted below.

As a former Hibiscus Coast Orcon+ user I can it is likely that is as good as it will get although they might be able to squeeze a little bit more out of it. I use to leave in the Tindalls Beach area and the maximum I could get was only 3.3Mb/s on speedtest with a line rate of about 4000Kbps. Which is twice the speed my neighbour could get with Telecom, simply due to distance to the exchange I believe which if you didn't know is the building by the bus stop across the road from Whangaparaoa Shopping Centre.

Thanks there Lapze, I might try and see if they can squeeze a bit more out of it. I would have thought Manly would have been closer to the exchange than tindalls beach but perhaps not in terms of cable length.

HBC is well known for bad sync speeds.

Do the usual things, unplug all your phones, faxs etc and then reboot your modem. See if that makes a difference.

Make sure you don't have any extension cords plugged into your DSL modem.

Thanks Sounddude. I've tried disconnecting everything and rebooting etc. I'll tryin the next couple of days to connect the modem into the main jack that comes in from the road, the demarc point I think it's called, and see if that helps.
Why is the HBC well known for bad synch speeds?
According to google maps I'm 2 kms away from the exchange by road. Looking at
http://www.internode.on.net/residential/broadband/adsl/extreme/
and this
http://fremnet.net/article/216/adsl-theoretical-speed-calculator
and this guy

I should be expecting at between 8 - 12 Mbps.
According to Telecoms website they have no plans to stick a cabinet in servicing my street, which I assume means they probably think that we should be close enough to the exchange?

Downstream Noise Margin: 6.4dB

That's a really low (and bad) signal to noise margin. There could some problems with your wiring or phone line, or perhaps you have a faulty filter on one of your POTS devices (eg: phone, fax, sky). Can't say for sure.

I doubt you will get a better sync speed without figuring out what is causing that low noise margin.

Thanks Ragnor, I'll be trying connecting straight to the demarc point sometime this week once I borrow a laptop and I'll disconnect the line that runs to all the other jackpoints and see if that makes a difference. What would a common or average Downstream Noise Margin be? Why is the upstream noise margin so much higher? Or is that also low? How are they different, it is running along the same wires so shouldn't it be the same?

If I remember correctly upstream and downstream use different frequency bands on the line. So it's possible you have high noise in the band used by downstream.

What are good rates: I think these are from an Alactel report in 2006 (maybe) but are widely quoted on the net

Attenuation Rates:

<20bB. = Outstanding
20dB-30dB. = Excellent
30dB-40dB. = Very Good
40dB-50dB. = Good
50dB-60dB. = Poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB+ = Bad and will experience connectivity issues

Noise Margin:

<6bB = Bad and will experience no line synchronisation or intermittent synchronisation problems.
7dB-10dB. = Fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions.
11dB-20dB. = Good with little or no synchronisation problems
20dB-28dB. = Excellent
29dB. or above = Outstanding

Have you tried forcing your router to sync with the G.DMT profile? I have an issue where if I force my router to sync with G.DMT, I get a 2Mb/s connection. If I allow it to autosense, if syncs at 1Mb. Also, if Orcon forces my connection to G.DMT, I also get 1Mb. (This is also why I get hacked off when people complain about 4Mb connections. Some of us barely get 2Mb - so they can just stow it).

I haven't tried synching the G.DMT profile and in fact I have no idea what that is! haha. But I will investigate it futher this week.
Yes it seems a very complicated business this, with so many variables and outside factors.
Bee, I would be over the moon with speeds like that! So you're connection is stable with not too many dropouts? Do you know how far from the exchange you are?
It seems I need to raise this noise margin higher, but given you're results Bee I wonder if there are other factors involved with my line too.

just did a speed test now and got 12.36Mb/s download and .77Mb/s upload...

and 4.07Mb/s download to a server in Florida!

Ok then. So I've finally had time to borrow an old laptop. I've connected the modem to the main phone jack (1st one in from the road) and was pleasently suprised with this result

Nearly 3 times as fast as previous. Below is the router stats, slighlty murky sorry, this laptops running xubuntu, unfamiliar teritory. So I'm guessing somewhere in my ceiling where all the phone lines join up, I have a problem. I guess I'll have to go up there and disconnect each one to see where the culprit lies. I'm still hopeful once I get that sorted they might be able to squeeze a bit more out of it. Optimistic maybe.

I notice that my noise ratio above is no better than it was before, yet I got much better speeds. So does that indicate there may be other problems futher down the line towards the exchange?
