Currently on Orcon Purple @ Home FS/FS 51GB and loathe it compared to 256k pan I was on up until a month ago.
Looked at the business broadband plans today and while they are limited to ADSL, for the same amount of $$ I can get an extra 4GB a month.

What I am wondering is - does it use the same 'pathway' to provide data as the home customers, or is there a seperate pool for business and home.

OK, So you went from a 256k/128k plan to a FS/FS plan, and you are getting worse speeds? What exactly do you loathe about it?

Can you send us your modem stats/sync rates etc

I certinally am getting worse speeds.
Peak http downloads (ie, VLC download, Winamp download, MSDN downloads) come down slower than the 256k connnection. With peak time being from 5.30pm when I get home until at least 1am when I give up.

I loathe the new plan as I am paying for speeds that should provide me at least a 100kb/sec download speed at anytime I wish to download (and in theory allow me 500kb+)

In November 2006 I was one of the many happy 256k customers whos lines started syncing at FS/128k and until a month ago was enjoying 400kb/s download speeds at any time during the day (peak or off peak, it didn't matter). After enjoying the speed boost it was hard to adjust to 256k so I upgraded!

BIG MISTAKE

As of Thursday, I requested my plan to be changed from FS/FS to FS/128k as there was no point in paying for the extra upload speed when the download speed can not cope. As I type this, that 128k effect seems to have come into effect, as I am no syncing slower on the up speed than I was 12 hours ago.

Thats exactly what I wanted to hear. Now, is there any information out there to back this up?

(Though if my 128k limitation makes my troubles subside, then I wont need to change :-) )

The business bandwidth mentioned in that blog is for Business type services, ie Fibre, Colocation etc. I will confirm if DSL is part of the bandwidth pool.

In the mean time, if you are a home user, hold off, as we have some upgrades being put into place next week which should help.

Have you tried to do any objecting testing to see what your Max throughout is like to a local speedtest site? If you're having genuine throughout issues then an incorrectly configured DSLAM port may be what you're seeing.

Are you local speeds slow or is it only international speeds which are slow? And can you download fine at crazy hours of the morning?

What are your speeds like compared to other users on the same plan?

If your local speeds are good then perhaps somehow you've been dodging the traffic management by being on an legacy plan.

Interesting, if true.

Business adsl customers lumped into the same bandwidth pool(s) as residential adsl is pretty lame.

I have done plenty of speedtests, and it is a peak time issue, which peak time being most of the day.
I can't test between 7.30am and 5.30pm during the week, but after 5.30pm, I am lucky to get 1.5Mbit/sec to national, 1Mbit to Sydney, 700Kbit to London and San Fran through Speedtests.

During the eatly hours of the morning (earliest I have testest is 5am) I can get what I would consider normal speeds, that being 200+kb/sec download speeds and speedtests that prove I have a FS/FS plan (well, until Saturday when I changed plans)

My biggest issue is that http downloads, be downloading setups for programs from across the globe, MSDN downloads, Youtube downloads (not streaming) , rapidshare (though RS I can understand) etc ALL seem to be capped at 25kb/sec during peak times (after 6pm weekdays and 10am weekends)
Best I have seen is MSDN at 42kb/sec last night.

At less than 32kb/sec download speed, I should have stayed on 256k/ Least I knew I was limited.

EDIT: Finally got a slow ticket issued at Orcon. Guess I shall see in a couple of days whats happening. Really don't want a tech coming around though and having to pay for it.

Assuming Purple @ home means you're on a wholesale UBS (non LLU) connection

try download's which would utilise Orcon's APE,WIX connectivity, ie

http://www.xnet.co.nz/speedtest/
http://speedtest.slingshot.co.nz
http://speedtest.vodafone.co.nz/

and then test something hosted by Telstraclear or Telecom to test their other domestic connectivity, preferrabibly an ISO or something like that.

If you find that all the tests give you roughtly the same results at the same time then welcome to the world of exchange congestion... hopefully you exchange will be cabnitised or have its hackhaul increased shortly.

I will do those speedtests, but I want to know how changing my plan would suddently take my rock solid connection and turn it upside down? Until the 27th of July 2009 I would never had said a bad word about Orcon, I recommened friends even join them because of my fantastic performance.

The day the plan changes - it goes to the dogs.

Just a note, unless you're on the Orcon+ network do not shift to a business connection. The reason I say this is that Orcon Business connections wholesaled from Telecom do not include free local calling - you'll start being charged for all calls, local national and international. This is because Telecom charges even for local calls to businesses and Orcon passes that on. It's not much (4c per minute) but it's more expensive than free.

(On the Orcon+ network where Orcon delivers the loop, local calling is free as you're used to on residential).

Sounddude, I'd love to hear whether business DSL is indeed served at the same priority as residential DSL, as I expected better (and was told that it would be better) when I shifted to a $40/month more expensive business connection.

Interesting to hear. I'm with Telstra Clear at the moment for phone and so how would Orcon charge me for local calls?

That does look quite tragic, get Orcon to log a fault with telecom to check on backhaul congestion to that exchange as local traffic issues are unlikely to be an ISP issue.

The reason you might have noticed the difference is because of the Telecom contention ratios at the exchange. ie users / mbps of bandwidth. I was under the impression that the different plan speeds 256/126 , FS/128 , FS/FS had different contention ratios which would affect your chances of getting your Max line speed.

Without getting in touch with Orcon to esculate this to Telecom they won't be able to do much for you but there is clearly an issue there..
