Hey guys, my first time here.

Just looking for some info, i've got my eyes on an imported new unlocked Blackberry 8120
from TradeMe and am looking to use it to take advantage of 2 Degrees's services.

The concern that i have is whether or not it will work on 2 Degrees as i have looked over
their settings page on their website and under the section where you can send yourself
the settings to the phone it does not have the Blackberry 8120 as an option.

I am wondering whether anyone out there knows for sure whether it will work on the network?
Im pretty sure i will have to load the settings on the phone as i dont think just putting the SIM into
the phone will get it up and running since its an import.

I know that i probably wont get all the features running since its going to be on prepay rather than
a Blackberry plan but all im really wanting to for is its QWERTY keypad for txt

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Blackberry handsets and services are very different to your standard handset where you can just put in some settings and services generally work

Voice and SMS should be no issue only if you want push email MMS and web browsing do your research first

Yup, and if you don't want that your better to go down the road and spend $99 for a simple phone that like a Blackberry on 2D will do voice and text only.

Thanks for your replies guys

Yeah im torn between going for the Pearl 8120 or buying a normal VFNZ Sony Ericsson handset
which i guess would have no problems using 2 Degrees. Im pretty undecided either way.

Im assuming that all Pearl Blackberries use the same settings, is there anyone that actually has one
up and running on 2 Degrees?

And in addition to that, depending on where the Blackberry originally came from, it might be SIM-locked. (If it isn't, then the phone features will work just fine).

Sorry i should have been clearer. What i meant was, whether anyone had a unlocked
Blackberry Pearl up and running on 2 Degrees in terms of its voice and TXT capabilities?
If so, then i am wondering what settings they loaded on to the phone to make it work on the network
as the model is not listed on the 2 Degrees site settings page where you can send yourself the phone the relevant settings to make it work.

I know the Blackberry services (eg. Push Email, MMS etc.) wont work on 2D and im not really concerned about this at this stage.

The phone shouldnt be SIM locked as it has been fully unlocked.
It sounds like it is going to be more hassle than its worth but any help would be appreciated as
im not really favouring the overpriced junk handsets that VFNZ is currently selling.

Ah, well, there are several staff here who have ex-Vodafone NZ Blackberries. They seem to pick up the SIM settings for SMS Centre without any problems, but I'm not certain that anyone has spent much time getting data settings configured, since we don't officially support them.

Bottom line is it will probably work for voice and text out of the box.

I use a Blackberry 7230 on 2degrees with no problems. As discussed, no email/internet work around is available as you need to be on account with Telecom/Vodafone, who pay RIM (Blackberry) a fee per handset.

There are apparent workarounds (changing APN's and downloading Opera Browser) but none have worked on my phone.

In summary, blackberry will be fine for SMS and Calling, not Email, Internet (I understand this is normal on most prepay plans in NZ).

A lot of things to consider, im not really a fan of PI phones, but the price is attractive i must say.

I have managed to set up my blackberry 8310 on vodafone with the 100MB addon I've aslo managed to get the Internet running fine with the blackberry browser and emails running using shangmail app. I havnt managed to set up mms though.

I have a Blackberry Pearl 8120, unlocked from overseas. I Signed up to 2-Degrees and it works a treat, except for the internet browsing. I spoke to the helpline and they are in the process of getting this setup soon. So assume it will be on pre-paid.
As I got this in the UK and whilst over there could use a pre-paid sim to surf the net, browse etc without having to sign up to a plan as required here in NZ. It's such a rip-off as well, totally disappointed by the providers here.. Hopefully the competition will prove to be better than both Vodafone and Telecom, bunch of w@#*ers!!

i've had a blackberry working voice and sms on 2degrees no trouble but data is certainly not going to work. Also be wary of the device trying to phone home as it may incur data charges.

A couple of people I know just really like using them for sms as the keyboards are great, anything has got to be better than this e71 i'm tapping this out on.
