Hi all,

Over the past week I've been getting really poor ping times to AU/US servers at peak times - anyone else experiencing anything similar?

Like between 6pm-12pm ping is appalling (like 500ms plus to US) - at first I thought maybe traffic shaping or something similar, but I'm not on an all you can eat plan or anything.

Anyone else experiencing poor performance recently?

Hi grimwulf,

Yes, we're seeing very slow speeds to the US east cost - 30kB/s when we used to get around 1MB/s. It's been this way for around a month. The following is a response from Snap support;

"I regret to inform you that we consider this as normal behavior for our network. We are looking into this, but don't consider it an outage at this point."

The did try changing our IP to work around the issue with some alternative routing but this didn't change things. I believe they are still looking into it.

We aren't seeing the same poor ping times as far as I'm aware yet.

Yeah I was getting poor speeds, so I've since swapped to a different ISP.

I am also getting generally poorer speeds than I was getting a month ago.

On monday night my usual fullspeed Torrents were extremely slow which lead me to believe I was being shaped. I was about to make a thread on here, but it seems to be okayish now.

I should note that our issue is not a peak time issue, it's consistent.

Checking ping times now it's around 170ms to east US.

There is definitely some traffic shaping going on at peak times. NNTP to a US server is getting about 30-40KB/s at peak times. If I connect via a US VPN to the same server it goes up to about 200KB/s. Offpeak a direct connection to the same server can get up to 800KB/s.

I don't see obvious shaping on my connection. Most of the traffic I do to the US is over a SSH tunnel and as mentioned the major speed decrease is not a peak time only thing.

Same here, or should I say "snap"?... (oh and thanks for the tip)
I dread to think that this is going to be the norm from on.

Just had the word from Snap that there's no news of a fix to their slow international issues. Time to switch ISP.

Oh great and just this week I was considering changing to Snap from Orcon after my speeds with them have been slowly dropping over the last couple months... brilliant, guess I'm just doomed to wallow in average ADSL speeds despite paying for ADSL2+.

You're not paying for ADSL2+, you're paying for a best effort shared network connection residential class which means no guarantee of speed or reliability.

With that said have you Telstra or Telecom (normal plan not Big Time) they have plenty of capacity and are performing well in my recent experience.

It's interesting that you guys are having problems, I haven't really had any issues with Snap speeds, for example this is the speedtest I just got:

(Do people consider this ok? In my experience (orcon, then xnet) it's pretty good). Note that this is after work hours, during work hours snap's international performance is somewhat lacking, more in the half megabit range. But that's not such a problem for me, during the day I need national performance for my VPN to work, and that's as good as ever. During the evening is when I'm browsing video sites, or downloading whatever - that's when I need my international bandwidth :)

It was the complete opposite on Xnet, work hours performance was great, but night time peak hours were terrible.

As for pings to west coast US I get around 170ms, which feels about right to me. Best I've ever had was 160ms.

National performance is fine, I can get 16Mbit/1Mbit to Snap's server in CHC according to speedtest.net. International is bad, pretty much 24/7. For example, this is at home on the Snap connection;

That's about 350kbit/s, a couple of months ago that was 1MByte/s (8Mbit/s). This is not from multiple data centres, and it's not the data centres that are slow.

Sure it's a best effort residential service, but that's a pretty poor effort.
