Hi

I am getting occasional drop outs in my DSL connection
I mostly notice this while playing COD4 on australian servers i get disconnected/intermittently disconnected for a few secounds at a time.
Sometimes the router states "Disconnected, Line Loopback" and it wont connect
I often have to turn the router off + on to reconnect

I live in Ilam,Christchurch (not in ADSL2 zone) near the university
Orcon ADSL
Orcon homehub router

These are my settings/information

INTERNET SETTINGS

Protocol = PPPoA
MTU = 1492
Line mode = ADSL
Encapsulation VC MUX
QoS class = UBR
PPPoE pass-through = off
UPnP = off

INTERNET STATUS

Downstream rate = 5216 kbps
Upstream rate = 160 kbps
PPPoE pass-through = disabled

Line mode = G.DMT
Max line rate = 5216 kbps (downstream) / 492 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin = 11.7dB (downstream) / 18 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation = 28.3 dB (downstream) / 17 dB (upstream)
Output power = 19.5 dBm (downstream) / 11.7 dBm (upstream)

Are these numbers ok?
Any problems?

Orcon/Xnet/Xtra in chc all had issues around then including myself.

ERX prolly went tits up.

For xtra it was just DNS that seemed to fall over. Orcon had PPP issues.

Hi, your sync rate is very low for the attenuation and your upstream sync rate is also very low, I would suggest you have wiring issues or a dud filter or a phone device thats not filtered. This will cause both poor sync rates and will also bump the modem off line when small changes happen in the phone circuit like it rings, someone picks up a phone etc.

Purhaps you could perform an isolation test, this involves disconnecting every phone/fax/Skybox device from the wall sockets and if possible identify the first socket that the cable connects to in the house and connect there.

Ideally an isolation test would involve disconnecting all the house wiring at the first socket or demarc and testing there so you are only using the line in from the street, but for most folk the practicalities of this are not easy.

Report back after some of those test, we are only interested in the details from Line mode down, ie rate, margin, attenuation, power.

As Cyril said, your line stats don't match what you should be getting.

Downstream rate = 5216 kbps
Upstream rate = 160 kbps

I would expect to see 800kpbs up.

This would indicate a wiring fault, which would explain the constant disconnections.

Follow Cryils instructions and report back!

Tried unpluging all the phones in the house
Removed the filter
Still using same jackpoint
small change, not sure if significant tho (probably not)

Dn rate: 5344
Up rate: 160

Max Line rate: 5344 (dn) / 532 (up)
Noise margin: 12.1 (dn) / 20 (up)
Line attenuation: 30.7 (dn) / 17 (up)
Output power: 19.4 (dn) / 10.9 (up)

I am on plan that limits upload speed to 128kbps

You should have mentioned that in the first place... as that is your problem right there.

Hi, yes I did not in your first post that its a 160k uplink, but thats not really an issue here what is a problem is that your uplink (sans the throttle) is only achieving 60% of what it should be able to and your down link should be closer to 7Mb/s.

As Ross has pointed out with a 160k uplink you will never get more than 4-5Mb/s download throughput but the fact that the modem sync is not achieving the speeds it should and that the modems getting bumped off from time to time indicates that there is still most likely a wiring issue in your home. A full isolation would be in order.
