Very clever marketing there, Orcon... Sending personalised messages from Iggy Pop to some people around the country. Something is cooking up!

Here is the message I received today:

Orcon is looking for eight kiwis to help Iggy Pop recreate one of his tracks. More details coming soon.

Use to be fast, but the last few months ugh... In the end after being with Orcon for 2 years changed ISP.

As for Iggy Pop, can't stand his music... of all the musicians in the world why Iggy?

Perhaps because he appeals to the demographics they want to target? Good question, I will ask.

Why Iggy? That is a good question.

We were looking for a true rock star, someone who was instantly recognisable, and who people would cut off their left arm for the opportunity to play with. A star that had appeal to people both young and old, and not just a one hit wonder.

The list of people that fit that description is surprisingly short, and Iggy was right at the top. In fact he was the first person that we approached. We are stoked that he was as into it as we are, and was super keen to be involved (I know you think I have to say that, but I am serious).

Not a fan of celebrity endorsements, I'm surprised they think it will be effective in the NZ market, Kiwi's aren't well known for their rampant celebrity fanboism and hero worship like some other countries.

Have to agree with Lurch, would have preferred they spent the money on improving service performance and reliability in order to reduce the amount of negative posts about Orcon performance and reliability which has way more effect on whether I'd recommend Orcon to friends and family.

lol well he certainly wouldn't have been right at the top of my list the guys a hasbeen Duncan, what you really ment to say was he's was the only guy we could afford maybe next time send him here first to read the forums and then let him make up his own mind. Im pretty sure if he'd read some of the complaints about shockingly slow speeds with orcon he'd have changed his mind pretty damn quick

I think you have been really rude during this whole topic. As Duncan explained Iggy is probably one of the very few rock singers who are known to a large audience of all ages.

If it's not your pick then fine, but being rude when someone from the company comes to explain the campaign and why - as asked here - is just unacceptable.

I think it's a clever and engaging campaign. Points to Orcon for doing something different. I actually cannot think of a New Zealand company which is more in touch with their customers.

Why Iggy?

Gotta say, i've just read his biography Open up and bleed by Paul Trynka and he comes across as an incredibly intelligent man. Perhaps a little too 'rock star' in his Iggy persona, but as Jim Osterberg (his real name) he seems like he'd be a very intellectual person indeed.

If i remember rightly, as a young man he debated against Bill Clinton and barely lost... Very archetypal too smart for his own good type guy.

The Bill Clinton thing is a whole different story. But Iggy has skills.

Either way, i'm interested to see where the promotion will go. I for one have no musical tendencies other than enjoying others play so will likely not have any part in it at all, but for others it could be fun.

Jeez buddy, see my previous post. Perhaps broaden your musical horizons? I'm mid 20's and enjoy Iggy Pop as much as Beethoven. You'd be surprised which songs are Iggy's creations you've bopped your head along to...

I think maybe you have missed the point of this whole Iggy thing. This isn't celebrity endorsement. We aren't paying Iggy to say 'use Orcon Broadband, it is great'. Iggy is re recording one of his most iconic tunes, together with 8 New Zealanders he has never met, all done live via the Internet (over Orcon broadband). This idea is about showcasing the incredible things that New Zealanders can do with Orcon broadband.

We don't expect people to use us as their provider just because someone famous says to, we know that Kiwi's aren't big on that kind of thing (because after all, we are Kiwi's too).

Hopefully that gives you guys a better idea of what we are up to and why :)

Thanks to those who have given us such great positive feedback. Having spent a couple of hours on Skype with him a couple of weeks back getting our first set of commercials (and that message to Mauricio) shot I can completely back up what Disrepective says about Iggy being a switched on, intelligent guy. He is smart, funny, and has amazing energy, especially considering the kind of life that he has led. While we know that he is not everyone's cup of tea (I freely admit to not being a massive Iggy fan when we started this) he does have a wide range of fans. He is also someone that even if you aren't a huge fan you can respect for his amazing creative output. I feel amazingly privileged personally to have had an oppourtunity to work with him.

what ever. but getting him to say that Orcon is New Zealands fastest ISP in an ad when according this forum its quite clear that it's not, is not a good look. When my customers ask me to recommend an ISP i send them here to take a look and have a read and then make up there own minds and yes a few have gone with orcon but the majority have gone elsewhere
