Well I moved house at the weekend and as I am totally sick to death of Orcon's miserable performance for the last couple of months I rang up to cancel my account so I can sign up at the new address with another provider.

Turns out you have to give 30 DAYS notice to cancel your account. So I am stuck paying for an extra month that I can't even use.

Now I realise this is in the terms and conditions (after the fact), but this seems pretty like a pretty lame attempt at gouging customers who aren't aware of the cancellation policy to me. Do they need 30 days to cancel process a cancellation? Of course not.

Anyway was wondering if anyone has had any experience getting around the cancellation policy, or if I am stuck with being screwed over and paying for the extra month?

Do you will be stuck, unless you can prove that their broadband services are below what they advertise. 30 days is nothing new, almost every phone/internet provider does the same. From caller ID cancellations, to changing of Pay TV channels, to closing accounts.

Na its in the tearms and conditions that you would have agreed to.

Better 30 days than a 2 year contract though.

A period for notification of termination is pretty standard in most contracts.

You can always pay the connection fee from your new provider usually around $99 and they just cut orcon and reconnect you in around 5 working days or less with credit card payment, then just square up your outstanding orcon bill.

Its clearly posted on their site, plus its one of very few companies that don't have a disconnection fee inside of 12 months... Dont think its unreasonable!!

I was initially fed the same story about 30 days, but when the CSR looked closer, they found that because I'd been a customer since before 2007, the 30 day cancellation policy didn't apply to me. I was able to nominate my exit date, and chose 7 days. If you pay by direct debit, I'd suggest to advise their accounts dept that you wish to cancel the arrangement, otherwise, you may end up being charged for an extra month. Thankfully I'd heard of this happening, and sure enough I was charged another month, and had to battle hard to get an amended account. Good luck.

Complain complain  one gets no where unless they do, its the only way to get any action in your favour,  dependant on who you get on the other end of the line.. but worth a shot. If you are paying for a service you cannot use, put it back on them. Ask for a credit for your last  months  payment, there are ways, Complaining  customers get the best deals from my experience. Dont give up. Nag them to death, is the best advice I can give. Good Luck
