IMHO building a cellsite 12 metres away from someones house is pretty questionable.
The EIRP of their sites is approx 1000 watts which means the minimum safe distance to comply with the regulations is 5 metres. Given that there are unresolved questions regarding the effect of RF energy on humans I would have thought that it was a bit inappropriate.

Councillor David Collings comment that there should be no cellphone towers in residential areas is stupid. There would be no end of complaints about poor coverage if this was the case.

I agree. I think that a solution along the lines of reducing the power output and changing the antenna radiation pattern to reduce the RF directed directly towards houses would be a good idea. I wonder why they didn't try that?

Having driven thru bucklands beach recently and trying to use a 2degrees phone, they need all the sites they can. Hell, even vodafone 3g was non existant thru most of eastern beach.

Someone should get a cellphone jammer and point it straight at this clowns house and see how he likes being denied cell service.

3G sites are the only ones u really need to worry about. But mroe because their fans can make really loud humming noises if the firmware f*cks out.

I also thought that was the most ridiculous comment as well.

Next they'll complain about poor coverage. No cell sites = no coverage. Pretty simple.

Go out west if you want to see crap coverage. I am glad that 2degrees are using these sites they can get into residental areas without too many problems.

The funny thing is sites in residential areas are typically much lower height than in urban or commercial areas, due to the more restrictive planning rules in these areas, but the downside is two-fold:
1. As the coverage area is smaller the operator needs more of these lower height sites to cover a given area
2. The RF levels at ground level, whilst still very low, are higher than with "normal" cell sites (antennas 20m+ above the ground), due to the directional nature of the antennas in the vertical plane.

So the community needs to chose between lower-height residential sites (less visually intrusive) or normal height sites (more visual, but less of them).

subtle but the two bedrooms are not yet built, so in fact Mr Hegley would be extending his house to within 12m of a cell tower (if it ever gets built).

Personally I think Mr Hegley is taking a rather selfish stance. The towers must go somewhere - just not by his house. Life is tough mate. Lucky he doesn't live up the hill by Mobil Corner where there are three towers within 100m. See below.

I suspect the Hegley family are Telecom customers as on tv he seemed to promote the fact that the nearest Telecom tower was in Beachlands. That one must be pumping out heaps of radiation to reach him in BBeach. Pity the poor bugger who lives by that one.

Cell towers are rather lovely looking things - I find the front of Mr Hegley's house rather unpleasant. It has ugly signs and vehicles parked all over the grass. It lowers the tone of the street and reduces property value in the area. I think I might start to complain.

Now I'm being silly but when in Rome ...

No one would choose to have a cellsite in front of their house and I suppose you'd fight it as much as you could, but in the end MISGuru is right, they have to go somewhere. I'd only have one concern if it happened to me and that's the money (i.e. devalued home). That's Rowan's biggest concern too, and fair enough. He thought he could build another couple of bedrooms, even increasing the value of his home and now they've ruined his plans. It's one of those unlucky things I suppose. In his submission to the TCF he says "We have 5 children in the home and 2 childrens bedrooms will be within 10 metres of the Mast". That's a bit of a fib, isn't it?

"They refused to look at alternative sites". Maybe the next street along will have people that don't kick up as big a fuss?

Wait to you get a tower 50 metres from your house, like I did yesterday, really the some of the comments posted are pure BS. The little person suffers once again, my parents house value has just plummeted with outdoor living area dominated with mini sky tower, not to mention associated health risks, Yes, potential buyers see health risks. Yes it could easily happen to you... no notification received from the council or 2 degrees by any residents in the immediate vacinity (Torbay), the tower is up where are screwed... Is this the Facist strategy of 2 degrees, we have no rights, it is compliant.. yet it affects the community, the property owner on which it is installed I asume would receive payment yet we have to live with it.

Carry on mocking people in a less fortunate situation.. were you not told as a child the wind may change and blow in your direction. People are treated like pawns by corporates and government. To be honest, I couldn't care less if they put one of the streetlight mounted cellsites in our street. They don't look that bad.

Same goes for those DSL2+ cabinets (though I already get 10mbps+) - I'd love to get near max speed...
