Geoff Zame of Craigs Investment Partners estimated that 2 degrees has had 100,000 new connections (ie SIMs out there).

Earleir this week, Mr Zame said 2degrees had passed the 100,000 connection mark in its first 12 weeks, blitzing past expectations. (2degrees chief executive Eric Hertz, as ever, declined to give any numbers but said the analyst has "underestimated our success".)

However, many customers are now pocketing two SIMs, and it remains to be seem how many are merely experimenting said Dr Reynolds [Telecom chief executive] today.

I wonder how many people there are who are actively using the service though...

I myself have four 2degrees sim cards, and only use one (soon to be two)

We have four active SIM cards on the 2 degrees network for this family.

Eric doesn't want to release the numbers because he doesn't really know who and how many customers he has, he will know how many sim cards have been sent out and sold but probably won't count them as a customer until they top up 1 or 2 times. (look at ITEY user post, he has 4 sims and only uses 1) Then I guess your a customer for 6-12 months if you don't top up again. So he probably has sent out 200,000 sims but only 100,000 have topped up. Funny business this one, there wouldn't be too many CEO's that didn't know how many customers they had.

Depends how many have registered on "My 2 Degrees" on the website and how many numbers they have ported from Telecom and Vodafone and MVNO's.

Note how Paul Reynolds complainted on Friday that XT network connections were below expectations.
I would say that 2 degrees has made a dent in their market share.

When do Vodafone next release there customer numbers? I do think they will be impacted more by the entry of 2 degrees.

I have several sims in use now, and I have a couple of unopened ones sitting around for use whenever needed.

They dont seem to be out of stock everywhere now, I was at a servo with a almost full pack of them just sitting on the counter as if they were daring people to steal them.

Never seen a $20 one for sale anywhere however, only the $2 ones...

100,000 doesn't really surprise me too much. Every single SIM sold will count as an active connection at this stage I think.
Didn't they give away 50,000 before launch? (or was it 30,000?)

As said above, what will really count is in 6 months time how many of those customers have topped up, and what is their ARPU.
Any $2 SIM that never gets topped up will have cost 2D money. ARPUs less than $5 is probably costing them money too I would think, certianly not paying back much of their investment.

2 Degrees are still in start up mode, and like any new provider will be bleeding cash, the big question is how soon before they become cashflow positive and can start to deal to some of the debt that they have.

At the moment they are chasing a lot of low value fruit, and to be honest I suspect that the majors are not unhappy having them off their hands,
But the crunch comes as 2degrees sets its sights higher up the value chain on data customers, If they can under price the majors and hold service levels they can truly become a real player, only time will tell.

Something 2 degrees could do (but won't) is provide Bestmate type services for customers in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. That way they aren't using Vodafone's network, and basically can provide unlimited type plans that aren't going to result in paying VF heaps of money.

I doubt that some of that is because of 2 degrees, rather it's because of people going to XT. I doubt very many people on contracts with Vodafone would go to 2 degrees, since it's prepay only. Any people who were on prepay with Vodafone would have old sims lying around that will take at least a year to expire.

The only ones likely to be recorded is those who port numbers over to 2 degrees (therefore disabling the sim). I read some where about calculations of who ported over to 2D, the writer estimated about 10,000 if I recall correctly.
