This Friday 2degrees will be announcing/introducing the Auto Top Up feature to customers.

Some information:

Auto Top Up is a handy service from to 2degrees that allows you to top up your prepay balance at the touch of a button.  When your balance drops below $2.50 you’ll get a text asking whether you want to be topped up automatically. Just text back “Y” or “y” and we’ll do it for you.

It’s easy to set up, you’re in control and you can change or end it whenever you want.
Setting yourself up

1. Setting up an Auto Top Up only takes a couple of minutes and then topping up is a breeze. Login to Your 2degrees and choose Top Up from the menu on the left of the screen. Then click on the “Set up an Auto Top Up” tile.
2. Enter the amount you’d like to top up each time your balance drops below $2.50
3. Then, if you haven’t already, register your credit or debit card for payment, through our secure accredited payment merchant, Flo2CashTM.
4. You’re all good to go!

When your balance drops below $2.50, we’ll send you a text asking whether you want to top up. You’ve got 48 hours to text back “Y” or “y” to this query.  If you do, we’ll top up your prepay account by charging the amount you selected to your registered credit card. If you don’t reply, that’s fine - no top up will happen.

You can view the status of your Auto Top Up in Your 2degrees. And you can change the amount, or end your Auto Top Up whenever you want.  If you don’t have internet access and need to stop your Auto Top Up, the 2degrees Care Team are also available 24/7 to do this on your behalf.

$2.50 is a little low IMO - thats only 11 mins at the 22c rate, or if you are calling off net at 44c its only 5 mins... Surely the threshold should be adjustable?

Will it trigger and top up during a call if you text back and extend the call duration?

Don't see how, if anything it will make it safer since people will not have to get their cards out as often and be vulnerable to shoulder surfing/theft of them.

c71931f: And now more credit card's will get stolen....

Is this a serious comment? I don't see why - unless you have inside knowledge of their systems and know for sure there's a security vulnerability there...

Somehow I doubt it.

It does create a scenario though were your lost or stolen phone suddenly has unlimited credit available for making malicious calls.

True but once you loose it what you do is go online and deactivate the SIM. Hasn't anybody seen this on Your 2degrees?

Also remembering Vodafone's system stores your credit card (if you have taken that option) to make topping up easier

"easier" - thats a tui billboard right there.

Trying to reason with offshore dis-service center about why you cant top up is not easier.

We needed to make an initial compromise between having it high enough that you still had some credit left (and could just say no if you didn't want to topup at that time) and having it low enough that you didn't get continually nagged if you were using free services.

However due to the architecture of the IN*, the auto topup service cannot be triggered mid call. It will only trigger at the end of a call. So as you have guessed, that does mean that you can be disconnected due to credit exhaustion, and then immediately topped up again.

*ITU/3GPP IN services are built using Service Independent Building-blocks (SIBs). In our IN, there is a SIB which connects and charges a call. The IN remains executing this SIB for the duration of the call - hence, no other activity related to the call in progress may occur. Once the call exits this SIB we can carry on and do other things such as check your balance and trigger auto top-up where appropriate.

CAMEL by Rogier Noldus is an excellent reference book if you're interested in how an IN works, or are having severe trouble with insomnia.

How about having an option to choose between a couple of preset values (changed via your 2degrees)?

What I'd really like is the ability to not even need to reply with "y" -- I've just installed a GPS tracker in my car, and it'd be wonderful if it could top itself up when it ran out of credit.

It will probably be free, like when you text the number off your topup voucher that text is free. I also go along with what deadlyllama said about having the ability to topup automatically without having to answer y. Thats how I have got my 2talk homephone setup. It just tops up by $20 automatically when the balance falls below $2.00

We've kept everything really simple as that's what our customers expect.

You register either a Debit OR credit card via the "Your 2 Degrees" section of the website. You choose how much you want to top up - or not. Top ups are limited to $100 per day.

When your balance reaches $2.50 we send you a text, you say Y or N. And this response is free to send back.

We are the only network to offer a notification text that empowers you to press a button to avoid running out or having to make a journey to top up.

If you want to find out more check out: www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/auto-top-up

Cheers!

It is a great idea 2degrees. I for one will definitely take this on board as I remember I was the one to originally put it in the suggestions thread so a big thumbs up from me.
