and the sync rate has gone from 2.2~2.7Mbps to 14.7Mbps which even though faster would seem a little low only being 300mtr from the cabinet it twould seem one needs to be right on top of it to get nearer 20Mbps here's the NetComm NB5Plus4 stats

Are you 300 metres from the cabinet or do you have 300 metres of wire between your modem and the cabinet? Big difference.

Hi, 8dB attenuation indicates near on 600m of cable assuming no other attenuating factors apply. Regardless I have an attenuation of 8.5dB and my broadcom based modem is syncing at 18Mb/s with reliable speedtests from Napier or Auckland of 15Mb/s.

Purhaps you could detail to us what your phone wiring layout is like, how many phone devices, alarms, faxs, Skyboxs etc and are they all filtered individually or with a central filter. Typically if you have filters on all your phone devices and star wiring then the very top end of the DSL spectrum is upset so you dont achieve the full speed that your line attenuation can support.

Also be aware that Telecom uses an 12dB Noise Margin target which means speeds much over 18Mb/s rarely happen unless you plugged straight into the cabinet. Orcon and Vodafones ULL networks however set their target for 6dB (which ADSL2 allows) and you can therefore get higher sync speeds albeit with less stability. Telecom have made a conservative approach to improve the stability of services at the sacrifice of some speed, an approach I think is reasonable.

the Ph wiring comes in from the little grey box out front and straight into the PH jack on the wall there's no demarcation point outside (i know confused the hell out of the corus tech too)... hmmmm i walked the distance between me and the cabinet and it's roughly 300mtrs give or take 2~3mtr i can't remeber which com chip is in the NetComm

Hi, ok well the 300kHz attenuation test indicates that there is 500-600m of cable as measured by the modem, which by and large are pretty accurate, so there is goes.

And from what you say the line goes from the street to the modem with no taps off anywhere or other phone devices across the line.

Rough guide is to take the actual as the crow flys distance from you to the exchange and multiply it by 1.8.

So in your case it would be around 500-600m, which as Cryil says is what your attenuation is saying.

@ Ragnor mine said october 2010 for cabinetisation so i'm quite surprised too to be up and going 10mths before the scheduled upgrade Corus have really pulled finger round here they're popping like mushrooms

Was also cabinetized on Monday. ADSL would not work after that on my Orcon Home hub. ADSL LED kept flashing fast then slow as it was unable to sync. Swapped it out for my old DSE ADSL 1 router and it came up file. Sending the Homehub back to Orcon for a look.

There was some thought from Orcon when I logged the fault that I was too close to the cabinet. It's about 300 meters.

Router problem or cabinetization problem.??

The issue is your connection is being passed through to Orcon's equipment in the exchange as they don't have any equipment in the cabinets. It's worse than before the cabinet because of an interference issue called "mid span injection".. ie: the stronger signals from the cabinet for other lines/connections mess with the signal strength of your line/connection.

Basically they will need to move you to be provided over Telecom Wholesale equipment rather than their own LLU gear for you to get the expected sync speed from being that close to the cabinet.

If you are not on Orcon+ ignore everything I just said and get them to log a line fault.

Those stats look good for an ADSL1 modem. ADSL1 will only give you 8mbit of downstram sync. Unsure why your homehub isn't syncing though, that does seem very strange.

What tests showed you with real world speed of 3.5mbit?

My cabinet was being worked on 12th feb as per chorus schedule and there were 2 workers working there too. But it's been a week since then and still no ADSL2+ switch. How long do they generally take to turn it on?

Tonite it's under 3 Mbits. How do you copy the image to reply??

Tested it on wifeys laptop and it shows 5.2Mbits. Guess my PC is due to be retired..
