So, 1st of Feb
Internet during peak times starts to feel a bit slow. I don't think much of it, although im struggling to get 100kb/sec from usenet groups (average in Jan was 600kb/sec)

2nd of Feb - You Tube SD is buffering, PDF downloads hovering at 50kb/sec from kmart, thewarehouse and Technet and usenet is still struggling to download anything at any speed over 160kb/sec

Tonight - much of the same.

During December and Jan, the internet was fast and fantastic. I was downloading 10-15 You Tube HD videos at average speeds of 80kb/sec each during peak times, usenet downloads were fast and general browsing was sweet. Now it might be a bit of a leap, but it feels like the free You Tube promo died and so Orcon took all the internet bandwith away, and im back to complaining about the speed of the connection.

Is it just me, or are other Orcon users feeling the same?

Note - I have no hard facts, its just a feeling.

Cheers

It's just you, I'm getting 1MB/s+ from usenet and youtube doesn't buffer on HD videos.

I'm on Orcon+ in Glenfield, speed is back to last year speeds again. Ping is much worse too. Youtube is buffering again too.

Given up with the help desk now, I think it's easier to just change provider.

Seems odd, especially since youtube is served from a local cache.

Can you show me your linestats please.

Are you using Orcons DNS servers?

Hi Sounddude, here are my line stats, it's not the speed thats the problem, I know my line isn't good, but it's the ping that annoys me, It jumps to about 300ms to aus servers at peak times with a jitter of around 150ms making games unplayable when I should get a bing of 60 - 70ms like normal times.

ADSL2+
Maximum line rate: 4592 kbps (downstream) / 1108 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 7.2 dB (downstream) / 8.5 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 43.9 dB (downstream) / 24.8 dB (upstream)
Output power: 19.6 dBm (downstream) / 12.6 dBm (upstream)

I've sent off trace routes to the help desk, but they just think I'm complaining about the speed.

Thanks for your help.

Do you know what exchange you are connected to?

I am connected to the Glenfield exchange as far as I'm aware. I was told it could just be congestion at the exchange?

Also, I can't connect to the steam store and a few other sites (can still connect with opera turbo so the sites aren't down), help desk just reset my line and that was pretty much it, no change. :(

Thanks

I will check for congestion for you. On the Orcon+ network we try our best to achieve a non-congested network. If it is congested, we will be upgrading.

We will sort it, I promise :)

We have scheduled an upgrade of a handover link which was showing signs of congestion. This s due to be worked on, on the morning of the 16th.

Just to be clear. Your slowness was only happening at peak times, and the pings were not constant but spiked up to 300ms to AU?

Hey, the slowness was only during peak times, same with the ping, this was to every where, including local servers/sites.

I still have the trace routes of the problem if you need them?

Oh, I have full web access today as well, including the steam store, so it's getting better.

Thanks for you help on the situation :)

yup post the traceroutes.

NZ recently had issues with Limelight networks in Australia, who host steam and some other important sites. We routed that via the US today.

Here they are, I haven't got ping results, and can't really get any till the problem happens again, if you need any more, just let me know. The random IP's are two servers that I play on most of the time.

Thanks
