Just looking at the 2degrees website this morning and noticed a couple of things:

(1) The cheapest SIM Cards seem to have been increased to $5 (which is somewhat understandable given the cost of VF and Telecom SIMs although in my opinion the current VF Value offers are quite good for the price)

From http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/pricing

  • SIM cards cost $5 and come loaded with $1 credit. However, limited quantities of our launch SIM cards are available and cost $2 and come loaded with $2 of airtime credit.

  • and

    (2) Has data really been increased to $1/Mb???

The pricing page still says "50c per megabyte to use the mobile internet " yet the terms and conditions document http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/c/document_library/get_file?uuid=a6865062-505a-4895-8980-a2c75911e794&groupId=10128 includes a table which is titled  "Calling Plans and Specific Terms and Conditions, The following terms and conditions apply from 12 February 2010".... and says "Data associated with mobile internet usage (non MMS) $1.00/MB, rounded up to the next KB and full cent, Minimum 1c charge per session"....

It is surprising that this has changed in the T&C document from 12 February 2010 when the pricing page itself still appears to have the ?old price and clause 23(c) suggests that there would be at least 10 working days notice and when possible 30days prior notice if charges materially increase - you would think plenty of time to change the pricing page. It is also suprising that 2degrees would increase data prices when they are relatively expensive compared to alternatives - Does anyone know whether they have just made a mistake in their charges table or whether the price of data has actually increased?

Jeez, they better not be putting the data charges up. I love the voice pricing of 2D but I have an iphone and the current data is expensive enough.

A quick call to the helpdesk will give the most up to date information on pricing.

I wonder what MOIP is and why it's banned?

You may not make 0900 calls, collect calls, special number calls, or any calls where charges are not immediately deducted from your Pay Now Account or use your Mobile Phone for voice over internet protocol ("

VOIP") or message over internet protocol ("MOIP") communications.

Fair enough with the SIM price rise, I'd say they lose a lot of money on a $2 SIM, I wish I could buy blank smart cards fr that price!

Interesting about the data though, I hope that does not go up or that will really make it undesirable!
Also interesting point about MOIP? I use Fishtext, a SMS carrier based in the UK a lot to bypass Vodafone's ridiculous SMS pricing.

+1, I never really got the point of a $2 SIM, when I would (perhaps dangerously) assume that these people would buy a $20 topup if they planed on actually using 2D's service? Wouldn't it be better to just buy a $20 SIM with $20 credit?

I assume that 2D are retaining the $20 SIM, with $20 credit?

It's definitely still 50c/MB. I would know; it would be me that configured it if changed!

Thanks SaltyNZ, that's great news - someone has obviously made an error in the official T&C .pdf - I wonder whether it was also incorrect in the earlier version - obviously when you see such a file which has an effective date of only a few days ago it is quite plausible that something like this has changed and many of us know from dealing with other companies that helpdesk staff do not always know what is going on.

I have seen some companies which provide a summary of changes with any new T&C file and I think that is useful as it saves a complete re-read - anyway I imagine someone from 2degrees will now fix the error and there will not be any further confusion.

Thanks again for the direct response.

it would make no sense if they increased the prices esp when I was told by an engineer they are looking at halving the data costs of the other two when they hit 3g.

Hi all - thanks for the proof reading!
It is definitely a typo. Data is 0.50cents per MB.
    T&C's are being corrected asap.

    Thanks!
