EWNZ selects Huawei for 3G network rollout

Mobile operator Econet Wireless New Zealand (EWNZ) has selected Huawei Technologies as its strategic partner for the rollout of a 3G network based on wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) technology. As the sole supplier, Huawei will begin deployment in the Auckland area, the largest city in the country, and hopes to complete the construction of a nationwide network within three years.

EWNZ is a subsidiary of Econet Wireless International. It secured GSM and 3G spectrum in early 2001 and immediately announced plans to roll out a GSM network later that year. This did not happen, however, and the cellco said it had been restricted by the regulatory environment. Following the implementation of the new Telecommunications Law in December 2001, EWNZ took advantage of the decision to include cellsite co-location and mandatory roaming, and revealed new plans to launch in the first half of 2003. This too failed to transpire, and by the end of October 2005 it had still to start work on its New Zealand mobile network. It has, however, re-opened roaming negotiations with Vodafone with a view to piggy-backing on its rival's GSM system in the interim period.

Finally we will have third operator coming in ...

Excellent news. Hopefully this won't turn out to be a flop.

One must wonder how high the roaming rates will be. That may discourage users from using Econet if they are either travelling, outside of Auckland or in an area without WCDMA coverage.

(I'm not saying the roaming should be free but if its anywhere near the international roaming rates then it could really turn off users)

One thing that will also be very interesting is what spectrum they use for their WCDMA network. Logic would assume they would use their 2100Mhz 3G stuff but remember they don't own this, it's only a joint partnership with the Maori trust because they were allowed to purchase it for a discounted price at the 3G spectrum auction. They could potentially offer a network at 1800Mhz where they own their own spectrum, 1800Mhz WCDMA offers substancially better coverage than a 2100Mhz network and by the time their network is live quadband WCDMA handsets could be commonplace to support the 850 and 1900 UMTS networks that are also planned in other parts of the world.

All I can see is a bludger coming into New Zealand to piggyback off Vodafone.

No I'm not a Vodafone fan - all these guys wont to do is a roaming agreement and use other peoples networks that other companies have spent millions on and you and I as a customer have paid in phone charges over the years.

All I can see is prices going up.

Besides sounds like one of those Nigeria Email Scams - well they took Te Huarahi Tika Trust for millions and have nothing to show for it.

I'm all for another network in NZ but needs to be like Virgin etc in the UK free choice

Econet are a very dodgy company - do a google search and look at some of the crap they have been involved in particularly in Zimbabwe.

I am surprised they even want to venture out of Africa, the market there to provide voice communications is huge with big $$ contracts and huge growth potential.

Thanks

After reading those it seems they aren't the knights in shining armor that their NZ website tries to make them out to be.

Their sole supplier is also showing their idea of a network. Huawei is recognized as a cheap, promising-a-lot, problematic, etc supplier. They were downgraded by many operators.

And I've heard their equipment is a bit from E\\\ , a bit from Nokia, a bit from Siemens...

And if you dont know yet Huawei is from China. (this doesnt mean anything just fyi)
