Been looking for a new plan (who isn't it seems?) and the Snap Masterplan (http://www.snap.net.nz/home/broadband/) plan looks interesting. How are those on the plan finding it? Gaming, downloading, email, web surfing, youtube, international sites, performance at certain times of day?

I sent you a DM regarding this, but:

The plan is good, their help and support team is excellent - and Ralph from Snap has a entertaining sig:
"Oh Snap. Some Ninjas And Pirates."

If I got paid $1 for everyone I have recommended Snap to - I would be pretty wealthy by now.
If I got paid $10 for everyone that connected to Snap because of me, I would be Rich.

Poor International bandwidth was why we switched away from Snap. Obviously as we no longer have a connection I can't comment on whether it's still an issue or not.

No it's not a issue - I'm in a household with 5 different people, and they are all trying to access the internet at the moment.

I have also got a Proxy Server running here for that reason - but still experience good download speeds.

We are also in Richmond, Nelson which has always experienced quite bad ADSL speeds, it's not Snap's fault, remember they just resell Telecom Wholesale.

Quite a few GZ users who were using Snap changed to different ISP's last year due to poor international performance in peak time.

Doesn't really make sense to give a glowing recommendation for an ISP that has fairly poor international performance in peak time imo.

Can anyone else on Snap provide some more measurements of international performance in peak time?

It is the ISP who handles International bandwidth.

Here's the broken image in my last post ^^ - It shows me downloading the latest iPhone Software to my linux box here at home.

I'm getting good international speeds, and also the stores here are on Snap for their internet connection and we are having no problems with that either, seems odd to me that people were experiencing bad speeds with them? Ah well, i'm just a happy customer.

That's probably coming from a local akamai cache, apple uses a CDN (content delivery network) for most downloads.

Yes I do have to say that recently I am experiencing much slower speeds than before on the international, I used to get much better speeds even during peak time.
My use of the internet is 99.99% international, especially in USA and Europe.

I hope they will fix the problem one way or another to get back to how it was before, otherwise.....

However I do have to say that they have an excellent service.

But less that 1Mb/s international is not broadband for me..

i have been with snap 18 months and have not really noticed any slow down, but where i live from the exchange 3500 is about the best i can get but last night i downloaded a torrent at 6.30pm and it didn't drop under 300kbp and every time i watch you tube it is instant no caching but i admit normal downloading has dropped speed but it is constant 24 hours so i dont think they are shaping it, but it is noticeable , waiting to see if improves when universities go on holiday

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Yes downloading with multiple threads (download accelerators, torrents, etc...) is still fine, if I push using those kind of tools then I can get to my maximum attainable speed.

However downloading (secured real-time streaming) outside youtube which can be cached, did really slow down, for me.

In my opinion like you said, this is not about shaping or anything like this, this is either routing problems (packets are going by slower/more busy routes) or maybe a lack of international bandwidth since they also provide Internet to an entire University.

If you find my posts from late last year when I left Snap you'll see that's the same issue that I was having.

A single TCP connection used to get around 1MB/s and then one day I could no longer get over 30kB/s. Using multiple connections you could get a decent speed but that's not useful for day to day situations.

It seems like they either installed some seriously broken shaping hardware and won't admit it or something else on their upstream network is broken.

Sounds like things haven't changed since September last year, makes me glad we switched.
