I was very impressed this morning to see that my phone automatically changed to the new non Daylight savings time. Something that never happened to me with all the years on vodafone. I had noticed that it had generally been keeping good time since I switched over.

Why don't Vodafone / Telecom implement this? It can't be just me that cares about having accurate time.

Very few GSM or WCDMA networks around the world transmit the time. It's certainly very cool to have.

Having said that the phone auto changing with DST is a feature of modern handsets, not the network.

This has caused plenty of issues with people who have handsets that predate the NZ DST change a few years ago and haven't upgraded the firmware so their phone changes time automatically on the old DST dates and not the new one!

Telecom, HTC Touch Pro 2. Mine changed automatically and I'm sure that Telecom has always done this? Oh wait.. That was on CDMA. Wonder how mine changed then? In my semi conscious state this morning I did see a message appear on my phone re daylight saving.

So this wasnt Telecom then?

Yeah it's nice to have, It must be a network feature though since this phone dates back to 2004 (Motorola V525) with the original Vodafone firmware . It is a shame that more places do not support this, especially international airports.

Indeed, you are not the only one who cares about having accurate time. I commented on this issue late last year after DST started:

Yawn.. Beat up the telco time... So imagine that meeting...
We want to spend $200,000 a year so peoples phones dont lose a second a month. That will go down like a bucket of cold vomit. Business make a profit end of.. As long as its not at the expense of human suffering, no drama.

I don't know what triggered this outburst, but to most people, it's handy if their phone keeps accurate time. Why bother wearing a watch if you always carry a mobile phone?

AFAIK, Telecom also have this function enabled on their XT network, but as you pointed out, Vodafone never has.

This means phones change DST accordingly, but...

1.Sometimes DST changes and the phone OS/firmware/ROM is too old to have the new dates. It happened with Windows Mobile devices, Symbian devices and others.

2.Changing DST automatically still doesn't set the time

It's nice to get a new handset (as I did yesterday for my parents-in-law), turn it on and the timezone, date and time are all updated without moving a finger. On Telecom XT.

I assumed the auto change wasnt going to happen so before bed, I changed the time manually back an hour. When the auto change happened this morning it took back another hour, so I had to recorrect it again an hour forward. No major! Should have just left the phone as it is. XT here.

Network time is only good for dumb phones that has simple clock function only. For smartphones, and ones that has its own timezone database, network time is practically useless because the timezone database is the bit that affects all apps on the phone. Hence earlier WM2003 or 2005, blackberry, symbian devices all had DST issues irrelevant of network time or changing the clock manually on the phone.

Maybe i used the wrong words. Having network time will only affect the clock function, it won't update the timezone database with the correct dst. So whilst the clock may show the correct time, all other apps like calendar will sill be using incorrect timezone information. The only way around this is to update the timezone database the correct dst info which Microsoft never did for WM2003 and same from Nokia on certain symbian devices, from memory.

Correct Telecom do on both CDMA (automatically) and on XT (on some phones you will need to ensure network / operator time is switched on, will be the same for 2D).

Yeah well, a lot of people couldn't care less about "other apps", they just want the clock to show the correct time.

I have an 07 model Motorola KRZR K1 and as Mauricio says, no support is provided for devices like this. So it changes from DST and back at the wrong time, then I have to manually change it back, 4 times every year. Whereas, if I was connected via a network such as XT or 2D which support network time setting, I wouldn't have to do this. Unfortunately, 2D don't have their own network where I live, so I'm stuck with the Vodafone roaming add-on...

me too! i have nokia 6110 navigator that i now use it as homephone with 2 degrees. after reading this topic, i quickly pickup my phone and saw the time has changed! wow! for the last 3 years when this phone is on vodafone, i have to manually change it... even though this is not a requirement, but it is always helpful to have this feature. thanks!
