Hey guys,

Big time is closing down and as Telecoms other plans are really behind the competition I am looking at other ISP's to move to.  I basically am down to Orcon and Slingshot as my final two.
The offpeak free data with slingshot has my attention.

Can anyone tell me what kind of speeds one might get with the likes of megaupload, hotfile, rapidshare etc during the offpeak times? assuming they had a premium account.

Am just curious as I have heard that the shaping is worse during offpeak than peak but not sure if that is correct or not.  If I am only going to get a trickle during the offpeak then its more marketing though I don't care if its not line speed either, im not here to download the internet etc..

to be honest, when the off peak times are out, everyone will be downloading so they'll be pretty slow

Any shaping will be the same, just people leave timers on so they start during off peak times

Just be careful though, with many users possibly moving, you'll probably only want to change companies in a couple of month due to slowdowns

Just like what happened with Xnet

I've been on slingshot pro now for 3 days.

Off peak speeds max out at 100Kb/Sec (1 mbit) for multiconnected http downloads. I've not yet tried other protocols.

I find that bulk downloading sites have speeds from 60kBps - 100kBps in the free data periods.
Having a premium account wont get better speeds during those times.

Cool thanks,  what kind of speeds do you get during the day on the same file?

Tempted with slingshot, I like the idea of the databanking also.. i hate paying for data and then having to use it all up because otherwise it expires....

$5 says the heaviest users from Big Time will move to Slingshot so you can expect off peak on Slingshot to be even slower and oversubscribed than it is already.

The old adage "you get what you pay for" will apply here.

Hi speeds during the day are fine (7mbit which is my line speed), in the evening, it seems to vary, sometimes 5mbit, last night at 11pm as slow as 0.5mbit.

I suspect then that if a bunch more subscribers (particularly of "big time" inclinations were to join slingshot they would need to purchase more bandwidth smartly, or it would grind to a halt at times.
Just my 5c worth.
