I have for the past couple of hours been trying to get my Samsung A867 to tether to 2D with the Samsung supplied software.  It works fine on Voda and Telecom.

I get " A connection to the remote computer could be established, so the port used for this connection was closed"

I have looked thru GZ and only find one reference to this problem in post
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=44227

I posted something similar to this a couple of weeks ago and got no replies  but have narrowed it down to what looks like a 2D problem..

The settings in the fone are correct as it works fine from there .  The settings in the Samsung software are:

Country : New Zealand

Network provider:2degrees

APNname: internet

Phone Number: *99#

These are the same setting as in the 2D FAQ.  I have tried manually in the software changing various setting. I even bought a 50Meg data plan just in case it was that .

As 2D have just released their data plan and I am moving house in a few weeks and may not have Internet for a week or two this would have been an ideal way  of getting email at home for my wife.  My other option is using XT data via tethering  or buying a Telecom T stick and when the data runs out putting in my 2D SIM but then will I have the same problem.

Thanx in advance.

There are no restrictions in place on what you can or cannot do. I don't know why it won't work for you, but it's certainly not because we're blocking it. Why would we want to do that? :-)

Thanx for the info. I tried to PM the original poster to see if he had sorted it but got response. Strange problem considering it works with XT and Vodafone.. I'll consider my data purchase a donation to 2D..

Hi. I am certainly not a expert in this or in  Samsung settings. but I have had a look at the settings in my Nokia. A slight question reared it head. I wondered if changing the Netwok Provider from " 2degrees" to " 2degrees Internet" might make a difference?

Thanx for the info.  The fone is fine  and connect to 2D without any  problems. It's the Samsung software tethering app that is the problem.  It connects fine to Voda and XT but gets reject by 2D.  Tried all sorts of settings but have basically given up..

Have you tried without the Samsung software? Just set it up as a dial up modem?

Had a Samsung on XT and it wouldn't connect until I put a custom init string in the modem settings.  The init string set up the APN to use.

My nokia doesn't seem to need it and picks the right APN, but the samsung needed to be told the correct APN.

the AT command is:

AT+CGDCONT=,"IP","internet"

Where "internet" is the name of the APN. I think the 2D apn is called "internet"

Just to clarify, I wasn't using any samsung software, just a Windows 7 dial up connection.

Where are you located?
if you are on 2degrees own network, then you can just leave the APN information blank and they will default you to the internet APN. this is probably what is happening on Vodafone and Telecom as well. If you are using 2degrees but outside their own network then you are roaming on Vodafone and you will need to specify the APN to be Internet as it was explained in the following post

The samsung software should allow you to choose the APN in the settings somewhere as well so just put in internet.

Problem solved.
It looks like a case of the Samsung software does like 2D. If I use the dialup networking and the Samsung as the modem I can tether OK in fact I'm sending this post via it. Guess this method would work for any carrier.

So speed test are via New Zealand DSL - Broadband Speedtest
XT - 1928 Kbits 3G
2D 221Kbit Edge
Voda 38 Kb GPRS

Now I' happy. Found the answer on the Telcom mobile website and HTC user manual..

Many thanks to all those who answered..

You can also use this for the phone number and then you don't have to worry about the AT command:

*99***1#

Where 1 is the connection ID of the stored APN on your phone that you want to use. In android this is the position of the APN in the list under settings which for me is the first one so is 1.

Apparently *99# should use the default APN on your phone but this did not work for me until I entered the AT command mikerussellnz mentioned. I just found the above out when searching for more info on the AT command, and for me the different phone number suits me better as it's easier to remember.
