Did you get a SMS with this text or a SMS that prompted you to click on a link to view the message? This is a "WAP Push" message that requires a data session to view the content.

*Sigh* PM your number and we might be able to block them, but I can't guarantee anything. Spammers by definition go out of their way to come through as many possible incoming sources as they can find.

There have been a lot of articles recently on SMS spam. As Vodafone warned during the MTAS inquiry reducing SMS termination rates means the entry cost to deliver SMS to unsolicited numbers drops significantly.

The reality is it's something we're going to have to get used to - it's going to be very hard to stop this once it starts, particularly since it's quite common for these messages to originate from overseas.

There are now anti SMS spam solutions for providers - I can see this being big business soon!

Australia is putting a lot of $ into the issue at present - some light reading for those who are interested.

Wow never heard of this sort of thing happening.
I worked for Telecom for 3 years and never had this issue.

But these things do happen! Loving my 2degrees.

What if all 3 providers agreed on some sort of message flagging system where ANY message duplicates of over 10 or more are only delivered if the sender is on a secure pre-submitted list.

If the sender was genuine but not on that persons list, it simply sends them a message similar to the "You have 1 Voicemail waiting" that says "You have 1 broadcast SMS waiting"

Theres millions of ways you could approach it really.. As long as it prevented spammers a delivering their message to the handset without passing thru a country-wide UCSMS system.

Rather than approaching this as a potential selling point like the ISPs did selling virus protection - it should really just be a collab effort with the ephasis on spam reduction.

We all do what we can. But to borrow a phrase from an elder statesman, the spam will always get through.

The issue isn't necessarily SMS's originating inside NZ - many of them are messages being terminated overseas and delivered via in some cases using gateways/operators that have BAK agreements for SMS termination.
