I've got an Android handset (Google ADP1, upgraded to Android 2.1 via cyanogenmod). I switched to 2degrees the day they announced data packs. Since then, I've noticed that my phone often doesn't have its data connection up; back on Vodafone, the 3G or GPRS icon was there all the time. The times I've noticed this, I'm usually getting the full 5 bars of signal.

Has anyone else had similar issues? I can't conclusively blame the problem on 2degrees seeing as I'm running hacked firmware, but I don't have a spare VF SIM to do a comparison.

yup, i have similar problem on my htc magic (bought from vodafone) running 1.6.

Are you somewhere with 2degrees cellsites (I am, in Wellington), or roaming on Vodafone?

Works fine for me, on HTC magic 1.6 stock, In Auckland. Of course there is currently only the edge network (Which should show an "E"). it always connects in a few seconds after leaving a wifi zone for example.

roaming on vodafone. reselecting the APN will make it work again although i only have one apn setting in there.

Ah yes I have had problems with roaming on the Vodafone network, particularly on the Canterbury plains. I used APNDROID to quickly toggle the data on/off which seems to get it to reconnect again. Also there is often only GPRS which is very very slow.

I have same problems In Auckland every few days. Running nexus one. Toggle it on and off fixes it right away. Never had this device on vodafone so not sure if its the device or network

I'm running a Samsungi5700 with 2.1, and i'm lucky enough to have 3G (staff)

but even on edge it connects on demand, and drops it on idle......excuse my ignorance, is this a desired feature (SIP voice etc?)
Let me know and i'll do some testing

If you're syncing with Google and have background data turned on (Settings -> accounts & sync -> Backrgound data) then you should have some sort of data connection up all the time.

Having said this I haven't noticed my data connection being down recently, but I haven't been into the Wellington CBD (where I work) for a few days either...

Thanks for the tip, i noticed I do have sync on, but havent used the Gmail acct really in anger, so experiment time:

Logged in to Gmail, checked all my contacts were there (sync ok) and emailed myself from work a couple of times. Emails were pushed out, and a HSDPA session started in just under 7secs from pressing send (from exchange based client) it does the download and alerted me at around 11secs from send.
Previously it showed as being idle (shows 3G coverage but HSDPA session down) until it is polled. (maybe the real Android bods know how this works...I'm a radio guy)
The HSDPA session comes up, email in, and then drops again....anyone else have it as problem...as always keen to see what if anything needs to change.

You usually see two icons on the status bar: one is data status, either radiating arcs for WiFi, or a square with up and down arrows for a cell network connection. The other is cell network status, the familiar five signal bars. If the data icon is present at all, then you've got a data session up. I don't think the icons have a way of indicating "3G available but not used". Unfortunately the tool I used to use to verify if a data session was really up on my rooted android 1.6 phone (ifconfig, from a command prompt) now refuses to work for me :-(

I may have put it too simply, I can confirm 2 ways, first, i agree, the up/down arrows show "3g" and no activity when idle, when a HSDPA session starts i see a H with the arrows showing traffic, likewise for Edge, I get a E and arrows showing passing traffic.

The more geekzone answer is I also have RF Siganl tracker app (eclair version)http://sites.google.com/site/androiddevelopmentproject/home/rf-signal-tracker

The app show when the HSDPA is connected and also another useful field in the Network info panel that shows "Data Activity" shows, In, Out, In/Out, so pretty sure its OK.

Oh, right, so you've got a data session up, it's just boring 3G but switches to HSDPA when the mail comes in? That makes sense -- the handset keeps a persistent TCP connection to google up, so I guess that means when data starts arriving the phone switches to HSDPA until the burst of data is over.

Hi all

This works on Android 2.1 with MMS and WAP and just WAP on Android 1.6 (but not for MMS)

1. Press on the menu button on the phone (left of the home button)
2. Select 'Settings'
3. Select 'Wireless & networks'
4. Select 'Mobile networks'
5. Select 'Access Point Names'
6. Press the menu button and select 'New APN'

7. Fill out the fields as below:

Name: 2degrees internet
APN: internet
Proxy:
Port:
Username:
Password:
Server:
MMSC:
MMS Proxy:
MMS Port:
MCC: 530
MNC: 24
Authentication Type:
APN Type: default

8. Press the back button (left of the menu button). WAP is now set up, skip the rest of the guide you do not want MMS set up.

9. To set up MMS, press the menu button and select 'New APN'
10. Fill out the fields as below:

Name: 2degrees MMS
APN: mms
Proxy:
Port:
Username:
Password:
Server:
MMSC: http://mms.2degreesmobile.net.nz/:48090
MMS proxy: 118.148.001.118 (It is very important that the extra 0's are not left out)
MMS port: 8080
MCC: 530
MNC: 24
Authentication Type:
APN type: mms

11. Press the back button
12. Turn off the phone and turn it back on. The settings will not work properly until the phone is restarted.

Im using a nexus one and have used lots of different roms and no luck with MMS with any of these settings?
