I bought an HTC Desire a week ago and received it today.  And just got my telecom number changed over to 2d.  Now, everything is working great but theres a problem when receiving texts: the time stamps are wrong.

When I send a text, it gives the correct sent time (exactly the same as my phones synced time), but when I receive a text, it says that I received it five minutes earlier.
So my conversations looked like this:

17:47: the reply I received at 17:51
17:50: the original text I sent at 17:50
17:52: my reply to the text dated at 17:47

I'm not sure if it's a phone problem or a 2d problem...

Firstly, well done on your phone, i sooo wanted one....

Assume its an import, looks to be quite common issue from a google around, apparently fixed on later releases.

I have tested on 2.1 with 2d and its good (my phone gets time from the network (Settings>>Date & time>>Automatic-Use network provided values)

What build are you on (Settings>>About phone)

I've not seen any other problems like this. The build number is "1.19.832.2 CL171460 release-keys"

Firmware? 2.1, 1.5 1.6?

eg: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f7/wrong-time-on-text-messages-19704/  and many others

seems like this is an issue for many people, but its not a 2d issue as another handset with your same sim doesnt suffer? threaded txt relies on the OS not the network

Seems esp ex T-mobile, Rodgers handsets, maybe consider where it was imported from?
my droid was T-Mobile Germany, flashing it with a generic firmware at 2.1 update 1 solved loads of weired things ( and gave me one i'm still working on solving) but thats Android for you

2.1.

The set came with a UK plug, so I could assume it's from there.  It's not really a big issue, just annoying.
I guess I'll wait and see what happens when 2.2 comes out, or try a new rom.

Thanks for the help :)

just spotted this, maybe a variation of the theme may work for you (set to manual etc etc)

I get the same problem on my xperia running WM6.1 I thought it was a 2D problem at first, then gave up worrying about it. The txt's still show in the correct order on mine so it's not the end of the world.
