I have asked SaltyNZ this question but I am hoping to get more explanation from other geekzone members.

I ported my 021 number to 2degrees just over 2 months ago.

I texted overseas quite a bit. Recently (just over 1-2 weeks ago), I realized that I did not get any of the overseas text. Please note that I have no problem receiving texts/sms from Celcom (malaysia), Softbank (japan), voipbuster or skype to my ported 021-xxxxxx number earlier.

AFAIK, no problem receiving text messages nationally.

Why all of a sudden I stop from receiving international texts? I even asked my friends to send to my 022-xxxxxxx number! None of the text messages went through to my ported 021 nor 022.

Anyone else is having this problem? I understand that some ppl having trouble with their ported numbers. My issue is, this seemed to work fine before, why now? I am still using the same phone. If this problem is related to my 'ported' number, why this is also not working with my 022 sim card. Any explanation 2degrees? I have asked them to call celcom (malaysia). The helpline even passed the phone to the 'supervisor'. They said they were aware of 2degrees presence in the market and there was no issue on their side. I agree with them because it works just fine before. Something must have changed recently? I am currently roaming on vodafone 2G network. thanks

to johnr: if i ported back my 021 to vodafone, will this problem resolved? i saved quite a bit of money when using 2degrees but if overseas text is unreliable, i would rather move back to vodafone. thanks

Hi, as far as this topic is concerned, my answer Will be what 2degrees gives you. I am the senior engineer responsible for the SMS, MMS, WAP Gateway, Voicemail, and IN (prepay) systems.

As I explained, we are not able to guarantee that foreign networks route messages to us properly, especially when porting is involved.

We would love to help, really, but there just isn't anything we can do other than to ask nicely, and foreign carriers don't have to listen. We're constantly working to improve things though.

If you port back to Vodafone the MSISDN will work the same as before it was ported to 2Degrees

Have you checked out this page on the 2Degrees site about international SMS might be a good idea to review this first

Great, as stated on 2degrees website - Softbank mobile (japan) have BIG TICK. So, any explanation why it is not working?

Maybe I can make it a little bit clearer.

The reason this doesn't happen with voice calls, is because a voice call to a ported number is treated the same way a voice call to a normal number is, except for a HOC:

* ISUP call is received at international gateway for destination country
* Gateway routes ISUP call (probably via multiple national switches) to number range holder
* Number range holder performs NP check, adds HOC, switches call to GSP
* GSP terminates call

Basically, the number range holder accepts the call and physically switches it.

SMS (mostly) isn't done that way, so it's possible for senders to route their messages in such a way that the signaling does not complete.

//Opinion mode on: NZ number portability for SMS would be a lot more reliable for everyone if the carriers accepted the SMS messages in their networks using a specialised SMSC or IN service, and retransmitted the messages to the GSP via the national interconnect link. That would make SMS to ported numbers as reliable as voice calls.

But it's not going to happen any time soon...

Thanks for your opinion. May I have your opinion on:

1. Why it works just fine before? Somehow, all these text msgs able to reach my phone earlier but not in the last 1-2 weeks.

2. Softbank mobile is under your big tick list. However, it is not working tonight.

I don't think I can make it any clearer, sorry. There are at least 6 carriers involved in the transaction; us, Vodafone, our international signaling carrier, Vodafone's international signaling carrier, Celcom/Softbank/Whoever, Celcom/Softbank/Whoever's international carrier, and probably multiple other international signaling carriers in the middle.

Somewhere, something, somehow, has changed. Since all but a couple of the things that could have changed are not in my network and therefore not under my control, or even visible to me, I can't give you a better answer than that. If the message arrives at 2degrees, we will try to deliver it.

2degrees' advice is still the same: the sender should complain to their carrier - Celcom, Softbank, Whoever, as they are the only ones who can do anything useful about it.

It may be best if your friend in Japan talks to their carrier as 2degrees have no control over the carrier in Japan.

Like I said, I tried to get them on the phone with Celcom (malaysia). The case was passed to the 'supervisor'. For ~half an hour they get them to send few more texts to check if it went through. The supervisor was quite happy that the text was sent alright and no problem on their side.

Side note, I also realized that 2degrees are not able to send the phone settings when requested from the web. On top of that I also never received any reminder when my $6 data ended. Maybe I am unlucky.

Just cause a handset advises message sent does not mean there is no fault. if it was working before it should be working now.

Celcom front line staff should be logging a fault to a technical team not passing it to some supervisor.

SMSR/SMSC logs should be checked / access7 traces done to see why the messages are failing this is what I would do working for Vodafone NZ. Check out this thread on the Vodafone NZ forum issue was resolved a few hours after we looked into the issue.

No, I understand what u mean. Celcom reps asked them to send me text, and they put them on hold for 5-10mins. Then they ask to send another one again. They took some time and ring back to tell that everything works fine on their end. This is not just a simple phone call, telling you to send text msg and see if the phone came out with 'message sent'. However, I will ask them to lodge fault to softbank mobile (japan) to see if there is also anything wrong on their side.

Maybe I should lodge fault to 2degrees?
