With prepay prices lower than most entry level post-pay plans, and no locked in term contracts... Why do people still demand a post-pay plan?

im guessing for convenience, you could keep the exact same pricing structure and open term all the contracts and no hardware subsidy. you would still get plenty of interested in the post paid plans just because you wouldnt have to top up anymore.

Telecoms cdma onebill plan was exactly that and it was very popular

the convenience of post pay for me is it doesn't require topup and roaming is easy when travelling

that would be an ecumenical matter

I find that topping up is the most annoying thing about being on prepay. I wasn't aware of auto top-up but it looks like a great service and I now wish that Telecom had it! As mentioned before, CDMA OneBill is good but that's not available on XT either... one of the downsides of living in a valley is that I'm stuck with Telecom (but generally happy with the service).

I agree with SteveON. With Auto Topup I can't see the problem. You might even save some money if you don't use all your allocation in a month. I do the text Y to confirm thing, but by haven't it fully automatic, isn't that as good as monthly billing?

I don't know about the business purporses thing. Is there no way (or is it much harder) to claim the costs currently?

I have it fully Automated, which is great Ill be on the phone and it will topup. I have not had to call CS for a long time. Plus I get 500 free texts ever time which is amazing!

If you have auto topup, I'm not sure why you'd top up $50 at a time.  There's no benefit in topping up $50 over $30.  By topping up $30 at a time, your freebies would last longer.  Still, if you're always using them up anyway, it's no difference.

I wouldn't get through 500 texts a month, so I'd prefer $30 at a time.  That way I'd still get 500 texts per $50 but they are available to me over a longer period.

I usually top up every 3 weeks, if they gave me 2x the value I have now, I would spend about $100 a month.

some people don't mind being locked into a 12/24 month contract if it means they get a hefty discount on the phone upfront.  I imagine 2 degrees will eventually offer this (or something like it) if they want to break into the smartphone market. not many people are willing to shell out $1000 for a phone up front and subsidies are only possible on postpaid.

I used to much prefer billed over prepaid accounts for the reasons already discussed above, but having managed the finances of a reasonably large business for a couple of years I now understand the enormous amount of resources that credit control can consume. The prepaid only model that 2 Degrees currently has is likely to allow them better efficiencies which ultimately gets passed down as a benefit to customers.

As an aside, onebill is available on XT, it is $10 per month with 200 any network texts and a reduced calling rate, link: http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/yourmobile/plansandpricing

Quote from link above.
"XT Onebill
If you like convenience then XT Onebill is for you. You can keep in touch with friends and family around NZ with one great calling rate no matter what network they are on. It makes things simple by combining your home and XT mobile calling on one bill. And you don't need to remember to top up your mobile. For a monthly fee of just $10, you'll get access to a 59c per minute call rate to any New Zealand network, anytime of the day plus 200 texts to any New Zealand network (excludes calls made or texts sent while roaming). And remember, with one second billing, you are billed by the second after the first minute. You'll also have the flexibility to personalise your plan by adding Data Extras and Text Extras. Visit us in store or call us on *123 to learn more about XT Onebill."

Both calls and data are too expensive when roaming overseas. As far as I can see, the data top up is not automatic on 2 degrees. Bit of a pain to have to stop downloading a file to top up. Data is also more expensive than Telecom or vodafone in NZ. So there's lots of reasons not to change carriers right now.

That's new(ish). It certainly wasn't available at launch, but I don't know how long it's been there for. I wonder whether the 500 MB "prepaid" mobile broadband is available with that...

I understand that, but I was asking about the pros and cons of a plan. Apparently there are heaps of people who wont move simply because they don't have a post paid plan. I actually agree with the above post. Credit control is a HUGE problem for most companies. The prepay model probably has saved 2degrees a LOT of resources to the point where snobing the post pay market has actually changed a lot of peoples habits.

Just like the min topup is $20 - I think its a smart move.

Next thing is Auto Direct Debit.
