Can I use my exiting hardware with http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/business/3985623/2degrees-launches-3G-network or do I have to get one of their usb sticks?

Just interested in the "$6 save my butt plan" after yesterdays TC meltdown in chch.

Cheers Don

The short answer is yes you can. You can get it working with dial up networking, or by tweaking the VF branded software you can use that as well (although it doesn't work without tweaking).

Any Linux instructions around?  I'm thinking of hooking it to the back of my firewall so it can act as a back up route.

Also, what do I need to tweek?

You may also find you need usb_modeswitch, with the custom Huawei command - this switches off the CD-ROM device and enables the modem device. I did quite a lot of automated testing a while back using a linux box with a Huawei stick.

Unless I misunderstand you, I don't see how the $6 50MB plan helps you out? From your other thead it sounded like you needed a cheap casual plan for the odd occasion when your regular connection goes down.

Which of the new 2degrees plans are you eyeing up? I probably have similar requirements to you and I don't see anything there that appeals. They all expire within 3 months, which doesnt suit my usage.

Yip.  $6 for 60 is better than $1/mb or having to pay $30 for 500...

yes well this conversation gets more interesting by the movement...  Just got a call from Paul Brislen (long story about a cute photo and a visit to Vodafone in shirley yesterday), turns out that VF have $10 for 100mb casual data now....  more details are coming to hand, I'll let you know when I get an email back from him.

He didn't ring me after seeing threads here...  I chased him down and left him a message via the call center, but hey, his number isn't hard to find, google is your friend.

Paul writes....

Prepay card - just top it up once a year to keep it active.

To add Broadband Lite (the $10/100MB) txt "Buy BBLITE" to 756 (you can
TXT from the dashboard on the Vodafone Connect software that comes with
the Vodem) and you're away.

The SIM has $30 on it and needs activating when you first get it - all
the process is on the pack.

----
$10 for the day seems ok to me.  Already have a vodem.  I assume the light data only lasts a month, but hey, as a temp fix for the day that's ok.

Now just have to figure out how to connect it to the linux box so that the wife can get at her emails.

Cheers Don

Were you able to get USSD working with the Vodem?
I havn't been able to thus far.

Also - E220 is an excellent modem for 3G I've had great results with it.

its 3G time!

I don't know about you guys, but my lovely Vodem does diddly squat in Windows XP.
In fact, all Huawei-related installers die immediately after execution. VMC doesn't find the modem, Windows' Device Manager only finds the virtual CD drive...
It works perfectly in 7 on the same laptop, and also in Ubuntu 10.04...
Should this post be elsewhere...?

Oh, that is cruel. It's found the darn thing.
Anyone got a copy on whatever's flashed on the 2degrees modems? :D

While I know you (presumably) have a Vodem have you considered the XT 500MB plan on prepay? If you don't use any data you'll pay $0 per month and then a maximum of $29.95 for 500MB.

I think you have missed the point of the first comment, he is looking for a alternative to xt, because of the Internet meltdown that happen the other day
