I have a couple of National Data Packs on board, and on my Nexus One I use 3G Watchdog to keep tabs on the amount of 3G data I am using.  I have used 3G Watchdog for about 5 months now (since I got the Nexus One) and have found it to be pretty accurate.  However in the last 2-3 weeks I have found it steadily counting more data than My 2 degrees reports me as using.

I am normally within a Broadband Zone (Ak), but over the weekend I was in Nelson.  The phone reported me as roaming on the Vodafone network.  The data used over the weekend compared to what 3G Watchdog is reporting I used is quite different (3G Watchdog about 20MB higher than My 2 degrees).  In fact, My 2 degrees is hardly reporting any data use over the weekend, whereas I know I was using quite heavily because I was using Maps extensively.

What could be going on here?  Is it possible there is some sort of lag between data use reported when on the Vodafone network compared to being in a Broadband Zone?  I am nearly at the end of my last National Data Pack, and granted I should get a text warning me, but I don't want to get caught on casual rates because the data use all of a sudden catches up.

CDRs (what you see in My 2degrees) are only cut when a session ends. If you have a smartphone that basically keeps the data connection open 24 hours (pretty much any Android or iToy) then you'll find My 2degrees lags behind a lot. It doesn't affect how much you're charged though, just how close to up-to-date the My 2degrees site is.

Ok but I shut the phone down on the flight back last night.  So that should have reset the session.  After terminating the session, how long before the usage is reported on My 2 degrees?  And would there be any lags in reported use due to the data used being on the Vodafone network?

It doesn't matter whether you're roaming or not, the system still charges the same. Could just be a lag in loading the CDRs -- that isn't realtime.

You won't go onto casual rates unless you have txt "unlock" to 233, as long as you are still "locked" data will just stop working when your nat. data pack runs out.

This seems a bit silly, the customer could use far more data than they have credit for and then 2 Degrees would be losing money.  Unless, of course, the system that maintains your prepaid balance is running from a different data source but then that can cause other problems.

CDRs are informational only. The IN stores your balance -- all of them, including data -- in realtime. We could toss the CDRs away and it wouldn't make any difference to prepay rating and charging.

Yet My 2degrees uses the CDRs?  So lose a CDR (which, of course can happen) and My 2degrees doesn't agree with the IN.  I assumed My 2degrees would get it's data from the IN to ensure the two always agreed.

Of course it's quite likely that you are simplifying things for us and it's a nice robust setup :)

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

The welcome screen with balance queries the IN directly. The usage screens are sourced from a CDR database.
