The 2 Degrees Terms and conditions state that you cant use VOIP on their network - does this mean they prevent it ? Vodafone (and I assume Telecom) have same T&C but dont actually block it.

I run WorldExchange VFX with several numbers and would actually find it quite useful to have one running on my mobile phone, especially for incoming calls as I am often not at the office to take the call.

Has anyone tried this ? (I dont really want to pay 35c/min to have my calls forwarded)

Telecom and vodafone say the same, however it works. I've tested it on vodafone and had real crappy calls where they break up and sound all robot like.

I use it on XT and it works real well, obviously because XT is always 3G and they have more capacity I'm sure.

I'm not too sure about 2degrees try in and report back, however you will need a g729 codec else the slow upload speed will cause people to not hear you properly.

2degrees slow upload? As long as you're on 3G they're going to be as fast as everyone else, right? Not that I've used 2degrees 3g on anything other than my phone, or run a speedtest, or anything, but I'd be interested to know where that claim comes from.

I have noticed that the ping time on 2degrees is about 300ms for me. That might probably cause dropouts on VOIP.

I will ask Biddle corp to post his findings between the 2 networks

Can't answer about fibre but 2D network is HSPA

No, I would say about 40% have fibre... Still very good on microwave sites though! I mean VOIP does not exist...

Pinging my server in auckland from my android phone (in wellington, so on 2degrees cell towers):

100 packets, 1% packet loss, rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 36/100/418/59 ms

Fair amount of jitter but should be usable if not brilliant.

I have recently shifted from VF to 2D and found a vast improvement in 3G coverage around Auckland.

I am currently trying to get PortGo (was PortSIP) running on my WinMo phone but cant get it to register with VFX as of yet. The conversion of my VFX number from hardware device to Asterisk is not totally complete (outgoing works but not incoming) yet which may be the problem - does anyone have experience with tricks for VFX setup on mobile clients ?

There are no "tricks" - just the problem that many softphone clients don't bother to include support for SIP AuthID's which are part of the SIP spec. Most VoIP providers don't use AuthID's - those that value security do as it adds a significant extra layer of security when people are trying brute force attacks on your network.

I actually found in my testing over Xmas that VoIP worked marginally better on Vodafone around Wellington than on XT. This was driving around with two PC's running data cards using softphone clients and logging the RTP stats for each call including jitter and packet loss. using G.729 as the voice codec is essential as G711 simply doesn't cope well with jitter or any packet loss.

Mobile VoIP has significant issues including latency during site handovers and the fact there is no guaranteed QoS. In my testing I found issues with both Vodafone and XT where both networks had major issues with call quality and many areas where both were brilliant.

If you're using Asterisk then surely you've got an asterisk server somewhere that connects to VFX, and are then trying to get PortGo to connect to the asterisk server? Or is your setup different in some way?
