Hey there,

It's been over 6 months since we last heard from 2degrees about numbers, does anyone else have any ideas if they will release any more numbers?

It seems every week someone I know makes the switch... Maybe they are waiting for plans to come out and mature before they stab a victory flag in the ground.

2degrees Mobile Thank you New Zealand! We just announced to the media that over 206,000 people have paid and used our network in the last 30 days. Thanks for joining us, there?s more great stuff coming in 2010! Spread the word

Now we can speculate!

It must be nearer 300k by now, with all the XT failures and new packs since then

My guess: prob around 300-350k on a one month active basis, prob around 500k on a 6 month active basis.

kind of surprised they haven;t come out with anything recently. One would think if they were doing really well they would want to tout it as much as possible.

Also, note that number of customers is kind of meaningless without ARPU figures (which they have never given out, only hinted at).

Note also that, unlike Telecom and Vodafone, tthey have no legal requirement to be truthful aboiut the number of customers they have.

Well I think they are hitting the curve, there are a lot of dis-satisfied customers. Most recently people are finding delays of texts from 10-40 minutes even hours.

But with the recent launch of 3G there will be a LOT of data only sims, this would count for over 20-30,000 alone by now.

Funny thing is i have never experienced the delays in texts in Christchurch. Texts to the UK, North Island and even CHCH-CHCH send rapidly (almost instantly national, ~5 mins internationally)

On Saturday 28 August at 12.52pm a mobile user ported their Telecom 027 number to 2degrees, and in the course of doing so became the 100,000th customer to port their mobile number to New Zealand’s newest mobile network.

the only number we can be sure of is the 100k ported one, and, assuming the 206 reported was accurate, whether the ratio has held, or gone up, or gone down is anybody's guess.

It might have gone up, because more people are aware of number porting.
It might have gone down, because of the launch of mobile BB where number porting is pointless, or because more people are using dual handsets (and so keeping their old number).

but like I mentioned above, connection volumes are basically meaningless.

1) the number in Telecom and Vodafone's annual report are always significantly overstated because they use 6 month active basis (industry standard). the 206k reported by 2D is supposedly on the more accurate 1 month active basis, but we have no way of knowing for sure. 2D have no legal requirement to be truthful about how many customers they have.
2) the number of people having 2 (or more) handsets is increasing, meaning they have two connections, but split their spend between 2 carriers.

for the connection numbers to make any sense you absolutely need ARPU or total revenue. Without it, you might as well not bother.

2D failure to report any new customer numbers could mean one of two things
1) they are doing really badly and don't want to say it (appearing to be crap in the media will slow their acquisition - a self fulfilling prophecy)
2) they are doing really well and don't want to give Voda and Telecom ammo for fighting regulation (after all, if 2D can do so well with current MTRs, why change them?)
