a. i was checking email(yahoo) frequently
or
b. going on m.facebook

Kind of depends on how big the emails are and if they have attachments etc. I wouldn't expect m.facebook to use too much though.

At $6 I'd say the best way is to buy it and try it and if you find you're using more than 3 in a month and live in a mobile broadband area buy the 512MB pack instead.

Just keep a close eye on your balance (*100#1#) and you'll get a good idea quick enough on how much you use on average.

You will probably get through a month the 50MB pack without a problem then.

The only way you'd be out of pocket would be if you used less than 12MB in a 30 day period (personally I can't see how that would be possible but then again I have a data hungry iPhone and can use that much in no time) and you'd be better paying 50c per MB. At $6 for 50MB it's not a great loss if you don't use it all and gives you peace of mind as you know they'll text you when you're getting close to using the pack up, there's no warning how much you're spending other than checking yourself when you're on the 50c/MB casual rate.

Would you recommend leaving the mobile data going all the time or turning it off and just switching it in when you want to check mail etc
ALso if you have wifi switched on does it use that if available instead of the broadband data?

What are you using it with, an iPad/iPhone or something else? I'd recommend leaving it turned on as then you get the best out of the device but if you're really concerned with data usage and don't mind the messing around to turn on and off do that.

The iPad/iPhone uses wifi first then cell data when wifi isn't available. I have noticed though that there seems to be a small amount of cell data usage when they are in sleep even when wifi is available, this is very small though but again if this concerns you just turn it off.

I think the best way is to keep everything turned on as that's how it's designed to be used and gives the best seamless experience but if you find you're spending more on cell data than you'd like then start making changes in how you use it.

The Consume app for iPad/iPhone is really useful for keeping track of your account, or on a phone you can also use *100#1# to get up to date info

150 bytes is just the start. There's a lot of information behind emails. Then there's the protocols and so on. A 150bytes message might use a few kilobytes at the end.

Correct. If you buy a car you know you have to buy petrol. If you don't want to spend money on petrol then you know you have to take the train to work - but then again why bother spending the money on a big car then? Get something smaller.

Same with smartphones. Those devices are designed to use mobile data. If you don't want to spend to much on mobile data then perhaps don't set your smartphone to use all the services - don't install weather apps, don't download emails, don't use mobile facebook, etc. Then at the end you will ask yourself "why did I put $1,000 on a smartphone if I am no using it?"

I am not saying you have to use, of course it's a personal option. And knowing you have the option of using WiFi at home, work, etc, helps in managing the usage. Better to have shorter battery life than paying mobile data...

If you keep using it at the same rate you'll use 50MB in 28 days so the $6 for 50MB looks like it will work well for you as if you used any less some would be going to waste as it only lasts 30 days.

I have a new iPhone on 2degrees and bought the 512 mb pack (1gb special) and have been surprised how hard it it to use all that data on a mobile device. At home I can chew through a gb in an average evening but when you are just emailing and using msm/facebook it's much less. I strugle to hit 5 mb/day -and I have been trying.
Unless you are Dling files or streaming video it should not amount to much.

It's just for personal use for me so I will try the $6 pack after and see how that goes. Keep in mind that with any data pack you buy if you use up the data before the time limit the excess charge is only 10c/mb until the rme ends. So even a $6 pack which lasts a month will give you 10c/mb as long as you buy one a month. Pretty neat.

Ill be grabbing a 50mb pack soon but will only really need it for 3 days.... might try out some other apps while Ive got it. Going by MorayDeath's usage, 50mb would prob last me quite some time just for emails :)

It's an iPhone and I will admit I use it a lot and just about all apps use data in some way, but I do listen to some Internet radio, email, web browse, chat, send/receive pix, play games, YouTube etc. There's a mixture of wifi and cell data (the 120 MB is for cell data only) but I don't worry about what I'm using where as the price is pretty reasonable.

got slightly confused by some posts
say I bought a 50mb pack for the month, and I used up all the data within the month
Will I be charged 10c/MB or 50c/MB the standard rate?
